Unbelievable no? Especially as it is an hr or so away!
Seems the OP now wants to move to Tasmania

As no one's posted the cheeky rules...here they are:

There are basically EIGHT ways that you can get a visa to live and work in the US:
(1) Marriage (or engagement in anticipation of marriage) to a US citizen.

(2) You have skills that are in short supply in the US e.g. scientific or medical training. A degree is normally a must. Or you have superior specialist skills with at least 12 years experience.

(3) You have an Employer who is willing to transfer you - but even the employer has to make a good case for you - so you have to be a manager unless you fall under category (2) above.

(4) You may get a Green card in the diversity lottery (UK citizens, except N.Ireland, are not generally eligible unless you, your spouse or parents were born abroad or held a different citizenship.

(5)You own or buy business (does not get you permanent resident status i.e. no green card)
The business must have a minimum value of around $150k (more the better) bearing in mind you will need somewhere to live and with any startup business you will need at least 2 years living money as back up. So a figure of $350k would be a nearer minimum

(6)You are an "investor" i.e. you have at least US $1m in assets to bring with you. half of that in a few areas. And your background will be investigated to the hilt.

(7)You have a close relative (mother, father, brother, sister and no further) who is an US citizen who would sponsor you, approx time this take 2-12 years…

(8.You are in a position to claim refugee status/political asylum. or You get a member of Congress to sponsor a private bill with legislation that applies just to you.

Recruitment agent will not take you seriously if you are not already in the US. Writing for jobs is really a waste of time; likewise US employers have no idea what foreign qualification are or mean (except Degrees) it may pay you to get your qualification translated into a US equivalent, there are Companies that do this ..
But if you are getting a visa under (2) above then you need a job offer before you can get the visa. Your Employer will be your sponsor this will cost them upward of $3k. So you can see you have to be offering something really special to get considered They may also have to prove to the Dept of labor that there is no American who can do the job if the position is to be permanent

If you want a change of surroundings there are beautiful countries in Europe to sample.

What does "more energy than England" mean? From where I'm standing England has more energy than the whole of the US put together.

I'd do a little more research if I were you, folks.

I find I get a lot more tried in the USA than I did in the UK.........

krizzy, the cost of living balances out down here, because of the poor wages one gets in this state in comparison to other places, and also because many things are expensive here compared to other states.

The cost of groceries, for example, is more dear here than in many other states as most of it has to be trucked in from major distances away, 'xepting oranges of course.
If you find groveries high in FL.....NEVER live on the Cape in MA.....I can cut my food bill in half in FL........and I'm only a few mins from Disney.......I think Min wage is a $ more here than FL......and housing costs are tens time higher.......

Sounds similar to where we are. 2000sq ft 4/2 $600k, 1800sq ft 3/2 $500k, both a good 10 miles inland. Near the sea a 2/2 condo will set you back around $1mil.

Rent on a 4/2 around $2500 per month

I'm going by my area.....we have a 2/1 half....with a large loft room.....its 1200 sqft...and worth around $380k plus.......

We are just catching up with other towns.....and have always been selling till last year about $100k less than anywhere else on the Cape....but low taxes here and very high in all the other towns have made us a better place to retire too.....

To answer some of the questions! England can be a very conservative country, which doesn't encourage much of anything. I have always wanted to experience living in NY because it seemed the opposite of this. The reason we said about New England, was because we thought NY itself might be too much of a shock. But from doing more research I've realised that outlying areas in NY is probably where we want to go. I have an MA in Photography and a degree in Psychology and statistics, so am somewhat confused what type of visa to apply for. We thought we'd talk to people on forums first to get people's feedback on life in America, before we went through the rigmarole of Visa's.
My partner has posted a query about Tasmania, because we are somewhat daunted so far by the american visa system, oh for an easy flow diagram!

We know we want to change our lives, because we are both 32 and it's a bit now or never, but we're not sure what. So thanks for any advice given.
