At least in my family, afghan specifically denotes a crocheted blanket. More used on the living room couch than on the bed .... My mother in law took up crocheting in old age, when arthritis meant she couldn't knit anymore. She made us a load of excellent afghans!

Same in our family. I crochet and knit, as does my sister, and we both have a number of afghans about the house, i.e. the lounging chair in the bedroom, across the living room sofa, all for wrapping up in when it is chilly or when one wants a nap.

An elderly American relative (sadly passed away now) would crochet afghans too. She had hearing problems & always called them "Africans"....

Wow, thank you all. This thread really developed!

I had a really busy thanksgiving with family from the UK and in laws over so only just got back to this. Thank you all for your replies, I will either get some shipped from the UK or find some here. My wife tosses and turns like she is wrestling an alligator, so having the sheet under the comforter usually ends up getting wrapped around her. I just don't like the feel of it either as I usually find the comforter has slid off. So new duvets and covers will be on the Christmas list I think

Thanks again for all the great posts.
