This is the 3rd consecutive drought year in No. Cal. I obviously don't keep a log, but in the 3 years I've lived here, I recall one week of real rain, other than that there have been a few days of drizzle. Snow levels this past year were the lowest for years. At least people around here seem to be more sensible than when I lived in LA, sprinklers are used moderately, and the city have only been doing minimal watering, allowing some grassed areas to virtually die off. For a couple of years now, restaurants only give water to people who request it. Very small measures, I know.

We desperately need a bad winter. Although I have to get to Reno in the first week of January, so please wait until after that.

I haven't mate. I think because my area is a big farming area, we sort of loose perspective on how bad the drought is down here. People talk about it, worry about it then adjust their sprinklers so they only come on 4 times a week instead of 5. I agree, I keep hearing about how bad this drought is, and it obviously is especially after what you have said, but no one seems to be doing much about it. Although I did listen to the governors debate on the radio the other day and Neel Kashkari seemed to have more plans than Jerry Brown to tackle the water shortage.

This is very true. You can practically see them rubbing their hands with glee every time they dupe the electorate into yet another "temporary" tax which is intended for "improving" the plunging schools.

Hopefully they are not relying on a strong El Nino since the forecasts coming out now are calling for a weak El Nino if there even is one, but good new is there isn't going to be a La Nina which should help bring some rain to California, but I would not count on the typical large rain falls with a strong El Nino.


In my years in California, I seem to recall more drought years then non, and with the population explosion over the last 30 years doesn't surprise me they are causing more and more issues. Build in an arid and semi-arid state and then add 38 million people, your gonna have water issues.

And since California produces such a large amount of crops for the US and Canada, pretty much everyone experiences the pain through higher produce prices.

The drought here is just insane to experience. Where we rent there are people out there everyday watering their grass and washing their cars. It makes no sense due to the lack of water. You can see in the reservoirs previous level and the difference is massive.

In lowes you can buy green paint for your lawn. Who would do that?

No awareness about water conservation whatsoever where we lived. Every morning people's sprinklers drenched the entire street with spray several feet high, usually having at least one broken valve gushing out.

We looked into buying the artificial turf as some of it is really good. But it's also really expensive! All our roses and other green things get direct 2gph (10 minutes IIRC) feeds to the base of each plant. We do have grass: a 15ft square covered by 4x 15ft 90degree sprinklers and that's it. And our water bill went down again this month.

We're also starting a 10' square slightly raised veggie patch, won't be much but better than nothing. Yes it'll be more water - but theoretically slightly less reliance on driving to the supermarket to buy veg that has travelled hundreds of miles.
