driving license???

I cant seem to find a definite answer to this so thought I would ask the people who have been there - done that...

Will my partner have to retake his driving test if we move to america? He hasnt upgraded his paper licence to a photocard, does that matter?? He has been driving for over 10 years.

Also, will I be able to learn to drive over there? I dont know if I actually want to, but its an option to explore!!!

Thanks
Mel

When I arrived in New Jersey, I had to take the written test, but got given an NJ licence immediately afterwards - although I believe it's 'probationary.'

You can't live a normal life in the US if you don't drive. Sad fact, but true. Public transport here sucks.

Apparently not too many New Jerseyites have been taught how to drive (swerving from lane to lane, never using turn signals, tailgating, jumping red lights, speeding, driving at 5pm on the freeway) so you'd probably fit in well there.

Practice in a parking lot. Just remember to have a big Starbucks in one hand, a cigarette in the other and your mobile phone clamped under one ear.

Changing gear? What the hell is that?

You must be some sort of pinko liberal European with your fancy-schmancy "standard" gearbox in your sub-micro-mini-compactmobile.

all driving laws depend on the state....but chances are, he'll have to take a full test, but any old lemming could past what they call a driving test over here.

you can depending on your state use your foreign license for 30/60/90 days, some states up to 12 months, but insurance and lack of a local drivers license as ID make it not very practical.

There are very few cities in the US where you would want to live without being able to drive. I don't think Atlanta is on the list. Unless you fancy being stuck at home most of the time, you'd better plan on learning to drive.
