Saw the first "Re-elect Al Gore in 2008" bumper sticker tonight.

Here is an interesting article from last Sunday's Observer:

"The very fact that Gore feels that this requires an explanation shows what a high-minded rationalist he is. He says he
believes that ideas were given a fair hearing on their merits until television came along and induced a kind of national
trance. This is a hoary line of argument, but Gore adds a novel neuropsychological twist, explaining that the brain's fear
centre, the amygdala - 'which as I'm sure you know comes from the Latin for "almond"' - receives only a trickle of
electrical impulses from the neocortex, the seat of reasoning, while sending back a torrent of data in return. This explains
why 'we respond to spiders and snakes and fire, but we are less likely to feel alarm if the threat to our species is
perceptible only by connecting a lot of dots to make up a complex pattern that has to be interpreted by the reasoning
centre of the brain'. Well, it's quite a challenge for the explainer."

I'd like to see a Republican that speaks anywhere near this level.

So there is a disconnect between the fear centre and the reasoning centre.

Explains a lot!

I read something a few years ago about how the fear center responds to visual and auditory stimulus - color, lighting, movements, shouting, music etc .... which is why propaganda always includes these cues.

The fear center when stimulated (even falsely) creates adrenalin which triggers the fight or flight instinct. In other words, the sense for an immediate need for action - even when in reality there is absolutely no need whatsoever for immediate action.

Whereas, when information goes through the reasoning center - through written words that don't embolden or highlight too much (such as a non-illustrated text) the brain is able to process rationally without the encumberance of fear.

So - people that no longer read or listen to proper news (narrated in calm and civilized tones) are perfect targets for this type of brainwashing.

These methods have been well known and abused for decades if not centuries. However, the last perpetrators to be exposed and punished for this type of manipulation were the Nazis.
