Default Child Permanent Resident turning 14? You need a new GC, pronto

Regular Public Service Announcement, since I’ve just done this for Child Number Two.

If you have a child with a green card who will soon be turning 14, and their GC won’t expire until after their 16th birthday, then your child needs to apply for a new GC and complete a biometrics appointment.

There is a 30 day window after their 14th birthday where you just pay the biometric charge of $85. If you miss this, then you pay the full GC issuing fee of $540.

It’s a relatively easy form, and can all be done online in about 10 mins. You have to first set up a USCIS account for your child if they don’t already have one - they’ll need a unique email address for this, and you’ll need access to it/ them to be around, to confirm verification codes that’ll be sent.

My son turned 14 last August and I took him to get biometrics done for his new GC a day or so after his birthday. Nothing has happened since. Every so often I get an email saying they are still reviewing his case and there are no new updates. We can apply for citizenship in October 2019 and I am starting to feel we will still be waiting to get his new GC then!

It was over a year for my daughter to receive hers.
