Car insurance ripping me off
I thought it was supposed to go down after you've been driving here incident free for a year?!?!
Progressive are proposing charging me the same for my next 6 months (in fact it's gone up $3). $423 on a 2005 Grand Am is too much when it's not even full coverage.
I'm changing.

Right.
05 Ford Focus and a 09 Toyota Sienna, two drivers, full coverage and $75K medical coverage. $1003 for 12 month coverage with Hartford.
In answer to the original question, some insurance companies look at the holding of a US driving license for three years as the premium easing point (ignoring the previous 36 years of UK license).

That's not a proper no claims discount you should get a percentage off each year you don't have an accident. You can get up to around 60% discount for 5 years no claims where we'all come from.

Re: Car insurance ripping me off
I could never believe how expensive car insurance was in the US. I paid something like $100 a month for a 2004 Neon, without full coverage. Now am back in the UK, and paying 240 pounds per year for fully comprehensive insurance. Plus a few quid a month extra for top level breakdown coverage. How nice.

I shopped around last time and while I could get it cheaper, it wasn't enough to be bothered with the hassle of switching. Folks fold me that after 12 months of US driving history it would go down. It hasn't.
This time I'm going for the cheapest as it's $200 less, with almost identical coverage.

If any of you have a US military connection, USAA has widened its eligibility recently to include anyone who has been honorably discharged. (it used to be officers only) I'm a member through my father. Their rates are fair, their pay-out for a claim is fair and their service is excellent.
