Chase has a 5/24 rule, open more than 5 credit card accounts in a 24 month period and they will decline your application. There's a lot of info about out there. Seems like it's not always enforced. Many credit card companies are pulling your credit report every month. They are not only monitoring your payment history with them, but also looking at payment/credit balances on your other cards. This is one of the reasons a lot of cards now come with a free monthly FICO score. AMEX uses Experian.
