Re: BBC
We have a couple of Roku devices and pay for an Acorn TV subscription. I just finished watching a fascinating mini documentary series on medicine (Pain, Pus & Poison - apparently was on BBC4). It doesn't have the depressing crap like Eastenders thankfully. Well worth the $5 per month or whatever it costs.
We also have BBC America on cable which is great for endless reruns of Top Gear (UK version).

Use a proxy service (it makes it 'appear' that you are connecting from the UK). We pay about 30 GBP for 6 months of proxy-tastic-ness. Don't bother with the free ones, they have no SLA and go down all the time. We have no cable tv: I only watch bbc iplayer with my trusty proxy

Re: BBC
One of our British neighbours was talking about something like UKTVNow or somesuch - reckons they have a DVR type catch up service of the last 2 weeks of a whole bunch of UK channels, including (don't quote me on this) Sky.. I think he said it was $20-odd a month. Didn't really pay much attention as we watch very little TV....we cut (most of) the cable a few months back and the kids haven't even noticed yet

Hmm, maybe this was it, although he didn't mention the initial setup costs....!

Re: BBC
I don't watch a great deal of TV anymore but I do enjoy listening to Radio 4, 4 extra and BBC World service.
I've got a great phone app called Radio Lounge which provides most BBC radio stations - national and local. Great to stream on bluetooth when I'm driving. You can get a lot of BBC radio re-runs on the web of course.

I use Hola and I've never had an issue (well, very rarely)!
Well worth the money ($0). What I save on not paying for a service, I can spend on British Bangers or Bacon.

Is there another thread on this in parallel? I thought I read some posts about a VPN that someone mentioned (began with an S- Snake something or other?)and someone else came back and said "just been looking at that - looks cool" and now I can't find them....am I going mad?

So what you're saying is I am going mad
Thanks for that!!
Ps - The old age thing isn't so funny, although my doc seems to think it is....when I go to see him now, he always starts with "before we start, lets all agree that we'll work on the fact that its a long time since you were 20 years old"

Really? How? All that would happen is only approved vendors would be able to login to iPlayer, whereas currently anyone can develop against iPlayer streams.

Re: BBC
Free browser plugins for iPlayer
paid for VPN/smart DNS to watch iPlayer
torrents
newsgroups
BBC America cable channel (least best option imo)
I use Sick Beard with SabNZBd to go get TV show series for me, they appear on my media player, stored on a NAS and I watch them on TV (I just type the name of the series I want, and they download by magic)

Personally if I was the OP, I would purchase a Roku whilst in the UK, register it there so you have access to BBC iPlayer, then when I was here I would pay for a DNS proxy service to allow continued access to Roku UK channels (4OD, iPlayer et al).
