i would use the airlines.They have boxes extra for bikes and its classed as a sporting equipment.

It *is* worth bringing over a bike that you like.
It varies from airline to airline, flight to flight. Some will give it to you as part of your allowance, others will make you pay. AA charged me $100 LHR-JFK last time I did it.
Spend a decent amount of time bubblewrapping and ziptying. Spacers in the dropouts is a good idea. Assume the bike is going to be dropped, rammed and slammed at every step and you'll be fine. Numerous webpages on this topic.
