Default $60k salary in Fredericksburg VA?

Hello to all you Brit ex pats. My husband has been offered a job in fredericksburg next year. Think we're looking at taking up the offer but I'm so anxious of the unknown of a new country.
I know nothing of this area & wondered if any of you guys could let me know what you think of the place...

Fredericksburg? Texas?

Better to ask in the main USA Forum. If it's the Texas Fredericksburg then I live in Austin, about 90 minutes away.

I will move this thread to the main US forums, as this part of the forum is only for arranging meet ups, and change the thread title so that those in the area you are looking to move to see it.

But really more info is needed from you for people to give you any meaningful response. So, how many of you in the family, is it just the two of you or do you have children? What kind of lifestyle would you be hoping for (i.e. type of property, how many holidays a year, will you want two cars, eating out every night or just twice a year, etc?). And what visa will your husband be on, will you be able to work if things do get tight?

If you can give some more info, then hopefully those in the Fredericksburg area will be able to advise.

Sorry.... My heads just in a complete whirl. All this came outta the blue so is a lot 2 take in. We wouldn't want an ectravagent lifestyle. We wouldn't eat outloads maybe once every couple of weeks. We would only have 1 car as I don't drive. I have 2 dogs so I wouldn't work as my dogs r my babies. I have a grown up daughter 26 who lives with us who may wanna come with us. We have been having 2 holidays a year but r happy 2 have just 1 major & 1 doggie holiday. We'd like a nice 3 bed place so family could come stay.

OK. Your daughter couldn't come with you anyway, she's too old unfortunately. You could possibly sponsor her later on (quite a bit later on), but the pertinent bit of info is what visa will hubby be on? That will make a huge difference if you do want her to follow you. If you're going on a temporary employment based visa, then will the company sponsor you for green cards?

I noticed you've been asked about the visa quite a few times now, but it really does make a difference - we're not just asking for fun! It's hard for anybody to help you without knowing that bit of vital information.

Not driving might be an issue as it often can be in the US where public transport isn't great, but hopefully those in the local area will be able to let you know what transport is like there, and let you know if you could afford a 3 bed place on that salary.

What will your husband be doing for a job?

OK, so you definitely can't work anyway, just as well you don't want to! Do you know if the company will sponsor you for green cards or is this just a temporary move? If your daughter isn't married you could sponsor her once you get green cards yourself, but you're best off asking about that in the immi section of the forum (add it on to your existing thread there). There's a lengthy wait I believe, but again the pros in the immi section will be able to advise.

It's good that the company is happy to wait until next October for him to be able to start work (and take the chance on that in the lottery draw system for H1B's), presumably he has specialist skills that they need to wait for, so hopefully they'll be prepared to pay to sponsor green cards as well.

Best of luck with it all.

Good that you have almost a year to sort things out. It's a big move, even for just the two of you. That'll give you plenty of time to research and also make a few trips there to look around and get a feel for the place. Have you started looking online at rental properties to get an idea of the rough costs?

Honestly, $60,000 annually before deductions for taxes, FICA, healthcare premium contributions, etc. will not allow you much to live on. Rentals in that part of Virginia are high because of its close proximity to Washington, D.C. Three bedroom apartment would run you $1500 per month. 11132 Sunburst Ln, Fredericksburg, VA 22407 - realtor.comĀ®

On top of that is utilities, phone, cable, food, car insurance and frankly, public transportation is virtually non-existent. If you can't drive, you will be stuck in your home until your husband comes home.

I would seriously think long and hard on this move at this price and with the inability to drive.

I agree entirely. I did a back-of-a-fag-packet analysis for someone looking to move to Virginia a couple of years ago, and concluded that $50,000 would be borderline poverty, leaving pretty much nothing for clothing, saving, pension, travel, holidays, etc. .... And that was somewhere near Norfolk or Virginia Beach IIRC, so much cheaper. I don't see $60,000 as viable in Fredericksburg unless you were prepared to live in a tiny apartment or in a trailer out-in-the-sticks, and even then it would be marginal.

This was it, from 2013. You'd start with $5,000/mth gross, and only have one car, but housing will cost more and you'll pay more tax. Petrol is a lot cheaper now, so with only one car $100/mth should be enough. Medical insurance isn't going to be subsidized with only two of you, so budget a minimum $1,000/mth for insurance and out of pocket expenses.
Well, $4,150/mth might go something like this: you're going to have some income tax to pay, but not much on $50k with four dependants, so say $400, rent is going to start at around $1,000, but you won't get much for that so let's say $1,200 for rent. Then vehicles: you pick up a couple of 5-6 year old vehicles for $8k-$10k, and are paying $500/mth in loans, but insurance is pricy to start with, so that'll be at least $250/mth, then tax, inspection and registration another $25/mth (average), petrol is cheap, but you'll find you use a lot more, so a tank full per vehicle every two weeks would be $300/mth. Food: costs more, for five of you a minimum $150/wk, and probably more, so $750/mth. Utilities: tend to be more than in the UK, in coastal Virginia you're probably looking at heating for four months of the year at a minimum $150/mth, and AC for six months of the year at $150-$200/mth, so let's say an average of $150/mth year round. Health insurance is going to be under Obamacare by next year, and heavily subsidized for those on low income, but the insurance cost alone will probably still cost (and I'm guessing here) a minimum $300/mth for your family (which is pretty good going when non-subsidized insurance typically costs $300-$500/person/mth! ), but then there are fees of several different types every time you go to the doctor, so with three children that could easily be $100/mth, and quite possibly more.

If my mental arithmetic is correct we have got a total of $3,975/mth, leaving $175/mth for clothing, vehicle repairs, traveling home to the UK, pension savings, college savings, etc.

Honestly it looks like your monthly income will barely cover your ongoing monthly costs, with nothing left for anything else. For a family of five looking for a comfortable but not extravagant lifestyle I think your gross income would need to be around $100k, out of which you'll pay a lot more tax and for medical insurance, be able to afford new cars (so greatly reduce the chance of having pricey repairs), and have money for clothes, pension, college savings, and air tickets home, etc. ..

I agree. I lived in VA for several years and considered a F'burg move from the Charlottesville area. 60k is an okay salary, but not for what is essentially a bedroom community of Washington DC. You could live further out - parts of Southern Spotsylvania, Orange, or even Northern Louisa Counties. Rural Virginia is lovely, but there will be a commute, and no public transportation.
