Default File for divorce before or after Naturalization interview?

Hello,

I've been married to a U.S. citizen for 26 years, applied for Naturalization....long story why it took so long, had 2 major car accidents, moved State and time went by.....I have my interview in 2 weeks.

I'm a worrier!! I want to file for divorce from my husband, I'm asking for Naturalization by being married to a U.S. citizen, I've also held a Permanent Resident Card for 25 years.

Will it be a problem if I go ahead and file for divorce before my interview? Or is it best to wait until after? If I do file will it be a problem to file after but before Oath ceremony as I know questions are asked if anything has changed?

I'm hoping because we've been married so long it doesn't matter but I worry about everything.

Thanks for any advice!

After being a permanent resident for 25 years, you are not naturalizing as a result of marriage. You are merely exchanging permanent residency for citizenship. Go ahead and file for divorce, it will have no effect on your application. (Marriage to a US citizen would have permitted you to naturalize after three years, rather than five -- you are way past that stage!) Good luck and don't worry!

Assuming you have been a permanent resident (green card holder) and resident in the US for more than five years, whether or not you are married to a US citizen makes not a scrap of difference to your abilty to naturalize as a US citizen.
