Hi,
I got british passport and want to migrate to America and start new life. Losing all my money in divorce settlement. I am in IT. Can someone please guide where to start and how to go about it.

Not a good idea to immigrate to the USA if you have no money.

With respect, what you want is irrelevant. You can only do what is allowed by US immigration - so start by reading the link that StuBear65 provided.

Losing all my money in divorce settlement.
If this is true, you definitely don't want to move to the US. There is no social safety net here... and living poor in the US is not fun.

I am in IT.
I'm also in IT... and so are many hundreds of thousands of others who don't need a US company to sponsor them for a visa, can start work tomorrow if asked, and have similar or superior education, skills, and experience. Those people are your competition for jobs. What do you bring to the table?

Take a step back and a breather. You're going through a stressful time.

My advice is don't make any large decisions for a year.

"I am in IT" could mean one of a million different things, from someone who could be headhunted by Google down to an oik who provides basic internal tech support for a company.

Unless your specialty within "IT" is the sort of thing that an employer would (i) shell out $8,000-$10,000 for the visa and related legal fees, AND (ii) be prepared to wait 6-18 months for you to get your visa and be allowed to start work, (when as Ian pointed out above, there are plenty of IT specialists in the US who can start work at just 2-3 weeks notice, and have negligible recruiting costs) then you are likely on a hiding to nothing.

Thanks for all replies.
I am a java developer with tons of experience. Idea of going to US was just to go to some equal place in Technology and where English is spoken. Can't go to France or Brazil! Can I? Just want to be away from UK for a while to get things out of mind and start again.

Once you have your head sorted, in a year, perhaps consider Canada or Australia.

My advice would be to start applying now to a number of the big tech companies in a hope they will sponsor you for a H-1B (for you to emigrate in October '18) and be realistic that even if they are willing your chances are at best around 30% due to the oversubscription of H-1B. Java dev experience is a big win and a need in the US, but the chances of being able to make the jump are in fairness relatively small. Still, it's possible.

How many years of experience is "tons"? What sort of education does "tons of experience" entail? What skill set was developed while you got "tons of experience"?

Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India... I'm sure there are others.

Ireland, Malta, Cyprus... English spoken in all 3 and no visa required.

Why not look for a company offering remote working and then spend the next year travelling around the sunny spots of Europe doing it? I live in the USA and that would absolutely be my ideal...
