Not necessarily. Pregnant women in the state of California can get free health care, including giving birth, at county hospitals. Woman has to up to urgent care/emergency room each time though. (My experience is of working in a Cali hospital - I don't know about other hospitals)

Not an option for me, but it works for some people.
Down my neck of the woods, birth wouldn't be a reason for a ambulance to come pick you up as it's considered predetermined...well not pick you up for free.

So yeah, does vary a lot by location.

and if the mother isnt in the country yet - will likely need a letter from her doc stating she can travel is shes late on in the pregnancy - AND an airline willing to take her (ie most have their own rules as to how late they will fly you).
