how to get in
Hi we are British expats in Australia but want to know how to get into USA
We have a little one with global development delay and it seems as its free health care in Canada we wouldn't get in as they would feel we will drain the system . Someone told me that British citizens can't get into USA unless they have $100000 or more in assets .. we are currently on holiday in California and prefer it to Perth Australia ... any advise ?????

Read this:
Pulaski's Ways: How to Live and Work in the USA : British Expat Wiki
If you can find a visa category there that you are a fit for, that's how you get in. Otherwise, sorry to say, it's probably not going to happen for you.

Try to remember a holiday is not an indication of what living and working here is like. Many (myself included) go through quite a huge bout of culture shock when reality sets in.

Have you looked into the possibility of getting into Canada? Just noticed you mentioned it here but seem to have dismissed it off hand. It would certainly bring you a lot closer to California.

It seems from your previous posts that you're a carpenter, so as you'll have gathered from the Wiki link above, that won't get you a visa to the US. Does your wife have any specialist skills or work in a senior position with a multi-national company? If so, perhaps she'd have more chance of an employment based visa.
Best of luck.

If the UK had a similar rule, we'd never get in, with my daughter's kidney issues. Guess I'm stuck here either way, non-EU spouse or not

I genuinely didn't know about that requirement for Canada. So back to the OP's needs. If Australia isn't working out for you, I don't think given your situation that the US would be any better, I'm afriad to say.

Take a drive to Stockton, Bakersfield or the Inland Empire and see what you think...
Actually California is very expensive to live in generally and it's currently in drought with no end in sight and no plan to deal with it.

Sorry the free healthcare available in Australia doesn't suit you. It sounds like a far better option than the no-healthcare available in the US.
