Default GC and SSN

as we now all have green cards - do me and DH need to get updated SSN cards without the legend? And are the kids now entitled to an ssn rather than ITILS?

Everyone with a GC qualifies for an SSN. Swap the legend ones for the legend-free ones then you have less documentation to produce for an I9.

What fatbrit said. I didn't update the SSN card until after I'd naturalized, though

If the kids have green cards, yup, go get them a ssn.

They can get them. Take their passports and green cards with you.

Nah, it's just buried further down the page.
Citizenship

We can accept only certain documents as proof of U.S. citizenship. These include a U.S. birth certificate, U.S. consular report of birth, U.S. passport, Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship. Noncitizens should see Social Security Numbers For Noncitizens (Publication No. 05-10096) for more information.

Getcher papers, miss!

We've had our GCs for ages now but never got our SS cards changed. I really can't be hooped unless I absolutely have to - am I ok to stay as I am with my original cards?

Yes and no. I'm not sure if a green card holder enjoys perks under the social security system for being a legal resident. I know that US Citizens do. A con is that you always have to show your eligibility to work while you still have the legend on your card.

You should be fine as the number won't change. It just "may" raise questions with some people if you have to present the actual card. I have never been asked to present my actual card though.

Thanks. I don't mind having to show my GC in the unlikely event that I change employers in the near future. The thought of having to go to the SS office for no good reason makes my sprouts quiver.

But be sure to do it if/when you naturalize. That is one status you'll definitely want SSA to know about.

edit: the mind picture of your spouts quivering has put me off my lunch. Thanks.

How could the thought of my gorgeous orbs make you anything other than salivate?

You don't have to, but makes it much easier when changing jobs, less stuff to show.
