Default Diversity Visa question

I know UK citizens are not typically eligible for the DV, but I've just realised something which might make me eligible - although a UK citizen, I was born in Belgium to a Belgian mother and can obtain a Belgian passport/citizenship if I so wish.

Is the distinction made solely on where one was born or does UK citizenship preclude eligibility in my case? I'm not placing any weight on the ability to do so but would be interesting to know.

Solely on where one was born.

As Noorah said, it is solely the place of your birth that is relevant when it comes to eligibility for the diversity visa lottery, not your nationality(s), nor which passport you hold - in other words you don't even need a Belgian passport, being born in Belgium is sufficent even if your mother was from Mongolia and your father was from from Tuvalu. Conversely, with the same parents, being born in the UK (or China, India, Mexico, Brazil, etc.) would disqualify you.

Also if you are married your spouse can apply because you are eligible irrespective of whether they qualify to enter the DVL in their own right. It's called "cross chargeablity".

Word of warning, do not pay any of the visa lottery websites to enter.

Use the official federal government method only.
