Thank you for expanding on your answer. Helpful for those newbies who are unaware that and IR visa does not mean you necessarily become a LR-1 but a CR-1 when you enter the POE.

But an IR visa does do that, doesn't it? Otherwise it's not IR, it's CR.

The visa is called an Immigrant Visa. I suggest that everyone use that terminology to avoid this very kind of question.
Immigrant Visas have different codes depending the beneficiary relationship to the petitioner. IR-1 is the spouse of a USC, married for +2 years. CR-1 is the spouse of a USC married for less than 2 years.
edit: The visa code and the admission code may end up being different, depending on where your 2nd wedding anniversary falls at the time of visa interview, and admission. What you get at admission matters the most (but it isn't a visa by that time!)
