Hey all,

I've read a few of your threads around the forum and although its great advice, I'm looking for more specific advice in regards to my own situation (although the advice given is great, its a lot to digest).

I'm 24, I'm a University Graduate of this year (Science-based degree), I don't have any relatives in the USA, I only have non-degree related work experience and would love to work my way up to moving to the USA by gaining a VISA then eventually gaining U.S. Citizenship.

The advice already given is as you say great, so go digest it. Repeating that advice will not make it easier to read.

My apologies Lansbury; the obvious steps that I can't take (e.g. relatives or possibility of getting married to a US citizen) are already crossed off of my list but I'm more confused about the routes (particular forms/types of VISAs that would still apply to me).

My apologies if this sound stupid but I'm not aware of the full spectrum of routes that may apply to me e.g. does being a graduate make me more eligible for one VISA over another for instance.

The answers to your question have been given by Pulaski in the WIKI. I doubt anything can be added to his comprehensive posting. Work visas require a degree, or years of experience, or some specialist skill, or a combination of all three.

try googling H1B visa it is non immigrant visa but who knows where it may lead....my son did that got a 3 year work visa then it was extended to 6 He is now a US citizen been there since 1999

First... VISA is a registered trademark for a credit card company - you want a visa, which is a travel document.

Second... you will never become a US citizen without first being a US permanent resident (= PR = green card).

Third... if your want to become a USC, then you must get a visa that will lead to you getting a green card - and not all visas do, nor are all US companies willing to sponsor you for a green card.

Start here... and keep in mind that most people in the world will never come to the US as anything other than a visitor.

What's your science based degree? (Is it a degree in one of the sciences or not?)

Why the urge to be a US citizen? How can you feel a loyalty if you've never lived here?

Are you aware of the pros and cons of being a citizen?

Hi Hotscot,

my science degree is BSc (Hons) Criminology & Forensic Science.
Its difficult to explain fully the 'urge' to seek US Citizenship, mainly because I eventually want to become a permanent resident; i understand that I would need to spend time in the U.S. in order to get the feel of the country however I am aware of some of the Pros and Cons e.g. the need to pledge allegiance to the United States

Forensic science is massively oversubscribed here after all the young 'uns who got into it based on watching CSI. But good luck

The US is a tough country to get into..you should concentrate in building a career over there first. No one is going to consider you over here without good experience.

And keep in mind, life over here can be a little bit different from back home. Not necessarily better, in many ways it can be worse, just different.
