Default An update. Nearly 4 months.

Well where to start? Ok me and the wife arrived last October from Thailand. This was after me living there for 5 years. I had lived in Oz and NZ before so for me its easy. But the wife its different. She had never lived in another country. Shes has visited many but just not lived there. Anyway we arrive Friday the 13th October 2006. On the Saturday we went to the beach with my mate and some of his friends. By the end of the day the wife was offered a job as a dental assistant as one of my mates friends is a dentist. BTW my wife knew nothing about this kind of job. She worked in advertising for Satchi and Satchi before coming to Oz. Anyway so she has to start a week or so later. I have 2 job offers and take the one thats paying more and a company i worked for before, BTW i'm a spark. So i was on great money for 40 hours as i was casual. The wife was on average money. Firstly she liked her job but as the weeks past she started to realise it just wasnt for her. Having to look in peoples mouths all day i could understand. Also the practice dealt with HIV patients and that freaked her out. As you could imagine? Anyway my job was only good to Xmas so i jumped ship the end of November and have now got a full time position doing CCTv and stuff like that. Never done much of it in the past. But i'm learning. So the wife has been unhappy in her job for a while. So one day decides to go and get another job. Anything would be better she said. So she tried Coles. Got a possible! Then she tried a couple of old folks homes as this is what a mate of mines girlfriend does. So she gets lucky and is now working about 15 minutes from home with more money and heaps of extra shifts if she wants. She has now met some nice girls thats she has things in common with. So all is good. So for those who are scared about getting work. Don't be! You may not get a job exactly as you want straight away. Its best to be working, doing something. Because i can tell you from experience. If you are working, then there seems to be more job offers. I have been offered 2 jobs since i started my new one. So all in all the wife is loving Oz. We have gone away from Xmas camping, we have been fishing and camping other times. We have been to NZ for a wedding and will be there again for another in March. So far i have not had the wife say. I want to go home! And i dont believe i will. BTW she is amazed at how easy it is to get a job. I for one agree. Good luck to those coming over or already here. Homesick? I am home. My home is where i am at that moment. JS

nice update. i just wanted to add however, that not everywhere is like sydney. we have been here nearly 6 months, and i have applied for job after job after job. everything from Big W/Woolies and cleaner at a hotel to what i am qualified for (teaching aide and working in the travel industry for nearly 18 years). i have qualifications coming out of my ears. i am an astute person who has worked in a service industry, have excellant people skills, customer service skills, computer skills, etc etc etc..............some days i have applied for 6 jobs, jobs which i know i can do with my eyes shut and one arm tied behind my back.......can i get a job, can i hell

it might have something to do with the area, we are semi-rural, about 2 hours drive north of sydney. i should imagine if i was in sydney, i wouldnt have a problem. it has the effect of me being very very down about it. here i am, a clever (ish) lady, with lots of experience, only ever had 4 jobs in her career (so very loyal), and yet i cant get a job, any job. so please do not say there is work out there if you want it :curse:

BTW, you sound really happy. is your wife thai? how does life compare to life in thailand? how do you find the cost of living in sydney? (as thats what we may have to do, for me to get work)

For me Sydney has always been easy. Lived here 8 years ago and had a job within 3 days. But then i'm a sparky. So easy to get work. Yes we are happy. We are lucky that things have worked out for us. My wife is is Thai. I lived in Thailand for 5 years. The way of life is alot better in many ways here. But Thailand is Thailand. Such a beautiful place but so is Sydney. Problem is we lived In Bangkok and its not a beautiful city. Things are cheap in Thailand especially for what me and the wife earned. She earned more than me at times. We had a good life in Thailand and we have a good life here. But we cant afford to go out to the pub as much here or go out for meals. Believe it or not its cheaper to eat out in Thailand than cook to for yourself. But i'd like to wish you all the best in finding a job. But i really do belive this. If you are working its easier to get a job. Its always the case. Even in London.BTW Sydney is expensive.

we know of 2 friends that have married thai ladies, and another one that has a thai girlfriend (his last passed away). they love the life. they go back to the UK every year or so. i am so glad your wife has settled. it can be so hard, coming from such a beautiful country as thailand, to a more commercialised place such as australia. what did your wife do in thailand?

O/H doesnt want to make to move nearer to a city, but i am becoming so depondant about not finding a job. i dont want to uproute the kids again. but, what can i do? i can do no more than i am doing.

what did your wife do in thailand?
She worked in advertising. She worked for a company that was part of Satchi and Satchi. My wife is a very educated woman like yourself. But she had no hesitation about taking a lesser job. I was telling her to aim higher and she said to me. She is happy to take a lesser job. My wife can read, write and speak English. But used to have a problem with her Ozzie bosses accents but could understand me. Once again , good luck in the job hunt.

thanks. i too have undersold myself, but as yet, nothing.
the thing is, once you are in a job it is easier to obtain higher things, as we all know. it s just getting that elusive foot on the ladder. i cant believe i am applying for cleaning jobs (and being turned down ). has satchi and satchi have no contacts in sydney?

our time will come. it is all about starting over again. sometimes though, it is bloody hard, especially with 2 kiddies.

whereabouts in sydney are you?

Not the exact same type of work. My wife worked in outdoor media. But as i said she was happier to take another job. Her job in Thailand paid well but she worked hard. So i guess this is a bit easier in the fact she has less stress.

whereabouts in sydney are you?

Randwick in the Eastern suburbs.

Mate, I seriously suggest you run along and EDUCATE yourselves about HIV and it's route into the body!!!!!

MY OH works for an HIV charity, I know what I'm talking about.

Small minded, pig headed, ignorant....just some of the 'tags' I can come up with right now!

In all honesty, she has much, much more chance of catching a nasty bug, disease or illness from working in an old folks home! Go figure! Improve your ignorance!

Actually what scared her was having to clean utensils. Though maybe not been used on a HIV patient, the fact that she cut herself once freaked her out. Right or wrong she took it upon herself not to work where there were risks. No matter how small. So get off your high horse and read what i actually meant by my posting. As for education regarding this. You dont know me. So dont start having a go.

I worked for a dentist for five years, i dealt with HIV patients too.Was i worried, not really, at first yes, but after reading up about it i realised the risks were minimal. I am so glad i read into it because as you say people panic which is natural, but we all have to take care of each other.

Jockstar ..so pleased things are working out for you. All the best.
