Default Brisbane, 7 months in!

Hi, just thought I'd give our 7 mth update.
Living in Bracken Ridge in a northern suburb of Brisbane, settled 3yr old into kindy, living a life of beaches barbies and parks, the outdoors, it's what we came for!
Unfortunatley,I still don't have work which is a nightmare, I was a staff nurse in the UK working for a private comapany in a specialised field, they don't have that role / service here so the nearest thing is medical rep which is far far too much travelling and time away from home. Tried to get admin work based on my office experience but no luck there either, I've not been on a ward in over 5 yrs so couldn't go back on without a refresher, I've applied to a couple of hospitals to do this but am still waiting. I've applied for so many jobs I'm a personal friend of careerone and seek!
Dave has a casual job who gives him work as and when, he 's just completed his crane converstion and is applying.
We never realsied how hard getting a job would be. and unfortunatley money is fast running out, we were luvky to have some there to support us, but realistically we may have another 4 months money left so if nothing comes along job wise we may have to return as I know we both can easily work in the UK.
We didn't realsie how hard that would all be, however as great believers of fate, what will be will be, we can't apply for more jobs than we are doing and we're trying every avenue, but even if we end up going back we've given it our best shot. We came away from England to have a go at a different way of life, if we go back we'd have a greater appreciation of what England has to offer (i think distance gives you clarity) either way it's win win, atleast the 3 of us wherever we are will be happy, healthy and having a blast!

p.s. If anyone needs a HR driver, Crane Driver, nurse or general admin bod on brisbane's north side feel free to get in touch

Hi Karen glad you are enjoying the lifestyle, disappointing for you re the work thou. Your attitude seems to be right and fingers crossed something will come your way soon. We are hoping to be in Brisbane by the middle of the year (still awaiting visa's) and it is so good to hear for others who have already made it.

Hang in there and thanks for sharing

Hi there,
I am sure you have, but have you called the nurse managers of the hospitals in Brisbane.I have a job in The Royal childrens hospital and i got that through direct contact with the nurse manager, they werent officially advertising. So far I have had loads of help from the lady at the RCH.It would be such a shame to have to come home if you cant find a job!
We are moving to Brighton in june(I think)but liked the look of Bracken ridge too.Hubby,me and 2 kids,3 and 5.How are you finding the area and what do you think of the kindys and schools?
Good luck!
Andy

We found getting the first job the worst. I think people like you to have experence in Oz and I guess I can understand that.

Have you had anyone look at your CV to make sure it's not too English

But good luck

if you wanna work then youl get a job. thats the absolute best thing about oz. if you wanna job youl get one. it may not be in the field you want but work is work is work. i'd like to be a popstar but my voice is far too croaky and deep so i do something different. maybe try something different. good luck with the interview and all. maybe look at other fields. if you cant get a job as an admin then something is really wrong. ive lived in 6 countries in my life and oz is by far the easiest to find work(as long as you arent too fussy). despite the medicals and bull they ask you to do before signing a contract. good luck mate.

Hope the interview went well and you'll get a job which will enable you to stay there

I love your attitude to making the best of things, I'm sure that will come across to any potential employer. Keep trying, it will be worth it. If you do have to go back home at least you'll know you given it your best shot and had a good time whilst you were there.

Hi, just to complete my update, yesterday i was offered not one but 2 jobs!!! After considering both I am going to be working for mission australia starting next tuesday., it's a great job, local, good money, mon - fri with bank hol's etc. off.............yeah!!!
To those who are looking, keep on going, it's so so hard, i applied for everything, in all different areas just to get my foot in the door somehwere but unsuccessfully, it isn't always as easy as people make out, I've wanted to work since I got here and only now (nearly 8 months in) have i been offered a job. so good luck to everybody who's looking, it'll be worth it in the end!
