OH Had secured a post in Melbourne which would be available in Jan. However the recent budget has taken that job away. So we are looking at different avenues. The stress on my OH over having to stay up in Darwin longer that he wants to is causing massive issues with in our family. Mainly due to the lack of support we can access for our youngest son with Aspergers. My son is finally seeing a paedatrician, after waiting since Jan 2011. The lack os specialists up here is really bad. This is the major reason why we need to move away from Darwin.
Still have no regrets about coming to Australia and i have enjoyed a lot of what Darwin has to offer, but im ready for a change of scenary now

enjoy the cool season, and the more robust economy up in Darwin compared to many parts of OZ.

The wait for specialists if you wont go private can be a nightmare anywhere. Wait list for a waiting list

Even going private for the hospital is just as bad as we have to wait for visiting specialists. Plus the favoured private paedatric specialist is not taking on any more patients for at least another 2 years.

Good luck with that. It doesn't matter how nice the weather is, the health and wellbeing of your family is so much more important.

It's a shame Darwin doesn't have better services as it is destined to become an important city in my opinion.

Our move from Darwin is not going to happen due to cut backs at OH's work. He is being moved to another postion with in Darwin. To say he is gutted is an understatement. With that happening and the fact our eldest son is concerned for his senior years schooling we have elected for him to go to boarding school for year 10 till he finishes year 12. He has an interview for a boarding scholarship once hubby has organised holidays. Luckily the school is near to where our only family in oz live, so they will act as guardians in emergencies.
Not an ideal situation but got to do what is best for our son and being up here with the added stress of our younger son with aspergers preventing him being able to study or concentrate out of school has been a major factor in our decision. Our middle son has also asked if he can go to boarding school but he will have to wait till he is in year 10 as we can not afford to send both of them straight away.
Still having a lot of issues with the support for our younger son in school. It may come to the stage that i move down to be nearer to family living the OH to finish his new role up here which could be another 3 years.
I know life is never easy but sometimes we feel as though we keep getting extra challenges thrown in the mix. the olny good thing about being up here longer is i get to keep my good job.

From what I hear from OH things are getting tough in all industries, I know you wanted to move down to Melbourne hon, but imagine if you moved & your OH couldn't secure a job or even yourself at least you know he has employment for the next 3 years.
I hope your eldest will be happy at boarding school all I can say he must have a very strong character to be happy to be away from his family.xx

Hi Geordie Mandy & any others with knowledge of Darwin. We are from the Uk but have been living in NZ for the 5 years - my hubby as a police officer (as he was in the UK ) and me as a Community Mental Health Nurse (as I was in the UK too !) Recently we have read about the NZ cops moving across to NT & wondered about making the move too, mainly for the weather & diversity of flora & fauna & higher wages ...we have not got the worries of young children as our daughter is now 20....so my questions are ....
1) Are there many ex Brits there and which nationality is the most dominant in the city ? Is it a laid back community or busy ?
2) I have read a lot of horror stories about aborigines randomly assaulting individuals or stealing stuff - Is this a reality in Darwin or an urban myth or something that may happen in other areas of NT ?? (We have lived in different areas of the UK and NZ so are obviously not concerned about multicultural living - just about a possible higher level of risk -during day to day living in Darwin -and not as police officer - where we would expect to come across more violence .)
3)Again - in day to day living - is there a fear of coming across a random crocodile or poisonous snake or spider or a dingo ???
4) Have you any knowledge of the mental health system there and working conditions - as I would be keen to continue as a CMHN ?
5) Is the cost of living high eg food, electric etc
6) Is there a public health system at all or does everyone have private medical insurance and if so how expensive is it ??

I realise it is a lot of questions - but if you or anyone with personal knowledge of Darwin are able to answer any or all of them - it would be really appreciated.......and of course if anyone wants to ask me about living & working in the UK or NZ as a mental health nurse or police officer - then I would be happy to help.....

There are a lot of Brits in Darwin as there are other nationalities, I have a Brit freind of mine who works for the NT police answering their phones in the emergency room and im pretty sure they are recruiting police. Mental health nurses are desperatly needed in Darwin and other areas of the NT.
Yes there are issues with the aboriginal population especially with drinking and drink related incidence. Most people are advised not to have an outside fridge due to the 'locals' helping them selves to the contents. But to be honest it is no worse than some of the rough areas of the north east that i grew up in.
i have a love hate relationship with Darwin. I have a fantastic job which i enjoy but i find the wet season very humid and oppresive. I also find Darwin to be very expensive compared to other areas of Australia. I have so far visited Cairns, the Gold Coast and Melbourne and they seemed much cheaper than Darwin.
To be honest ive only ever seen 1 snake in the wild wrapped round a tree in a nature park and one dead on the road. AS for crocs they can be an issue if you want to swim in croc in habited areas but they are signed. Ive not seen one in the wild , only ones in the crocidile park.
There are only 1 private hospital and 1 public hospital which are next to each other. WE have private medical insurance as it is needed up here. Many people say if your ill get on a plane to another area as there can be issues for certain medical specialities . There is a large aging population which keeps me very busy at work as a coordiantor for care in the home for the aged and disabled.
The education system up here i find not to be that good. However my kids are in a private christian school which is considered to be one of the best in Darwin. Their fees are a lot cheaper than similar schools else where in Australia. However as our eldest is going into year 10in Jan we have secured a scholarship in a boarding school close to where we have family and hope to eventually move to.
Darwin is very much what you make it, some people love being able to get outside for activities daily to be good. There are plenty of swimming places both free and those you pay for.
My own personal expereince with the mental health system was through a center for mental health where my son was supposed to be getting help and a diagnosis to cut a long story short we were badly let down due to lack of suitable staff. That was in the public system. However professionally with the private system i have a few clients who have a CMN and i have nothing but praise for them . So it really depends where you want to work.
The only advise i can give you is to have a visit and stay a while it may suit you it may not.
Housing is an issue for some people check on real estate sites and it will give you an idea of the cost of rentals and the cost to buy.
There is very little choice for food shopping we have coles or woolies. For retail we have harvey norman, Big w, Kmart and target, the good guys, godfreys are the main ones i can think off. There are small independent corner shops for bits and bobs. Very little in the way of furniture shops no ikea or other main furniture retail place. Casuarina shopping center is the biggest shopping center i believe in the NT. I manage to get office clothes from Rockmans and they are not overtly expensive and they are a few more up market clothes shops but ive never been in them.
I hope this will help you. It really depends on your life style if you like to shop till you drop then Darwin will be a disappointment.
there is only one power company up here Power and water and some people pay up to $1000 per quarter for electricity . However mine on average is around $400 in dry season and up to $700 approx in wet season. However i try to be strict with the aircon.

Hi Mandy ,Thanks for getting back to me so quickly and with all that info.
It seems like the shopping has the same stores as us here in Auckland !!.

I have one more question about Darwin,in terms of housing, which parts of Darwin do you think are both good & bad to live in & any area to avoid at all cost ??
We are planning to visit at some point if we do consider it seriously.
Hope your plans to move to Melbourne are coming on.

An aside -I am from the North East of England too - I have added a link for you below that makes me smile...(I lived there until I was 24 and have lived away for the past 24 years !!)

Ive lived in Lyons which is close to the Casuarina shopping center, the hospitals and university and i enjoyed living there but our house was too small so my husbands company moved us to another area and now we are virtually in the city. There are new suburbs springing up with mre affordable housing in palmaston but i dont know much about the areas there apart from the places i visit as part of my job. Usually yu can tell a rough area and it can be just a street by how the houses and gardens are kept. Ive only once felt uneasy visiting an area and that was a place called Karama as this street was very rough and there were gangs of aboriginal youth hanging around when i went to visit an old lady. However other parts were lovely. Its hard to say what are the no go areas although my freind who works for the police often does warn me if she hears anything of concern.
For me personally the areas i like Lyons, Fannie Bay, Larakeyah parts of Parap are nice, nightcliff and rapid creek also have nice areas. Tiwi and Nakara are also reasonable areas.

Cant believe how fast time is going in June it will be 3 years since we landed in Darwin. Since January its had its up and downs with hubby on deployment, and now eldest son at boarding school down in rural NSW. Just middle son and youngest with autism. Its been hard work but the end is in sight with hubby due back next month and a promise of a move down south in Jan. Also ive booked tickets for a month in the UK for all of us. None of the family know its a surprise for them. Only a few trusted friends know about it and they are helping check out cottages for us to stay in the various locations we will be visiting. Having a son with autism means its impossible for us to stay in hotels for more than a night or 2 with out issues arising.
Any way I just thought I would let those interested im still around just got my hands full so not much time for BE these days.

Hi Mandy hope you have enjoyed your holiday in the uk, I have enjoyed reading your blogs and found them to be both interesting and informative. Have you moved yet or are you still living in Darwin? I am from the north east myself and just recently we were told that my husband may have a job transfer to darwin and could possibly be relocating there in Jan 2014. I would value any more information with regards to education, health care, areas to live etc.. My husband and I have never been to Australia before and next month his company are sending us across for a brief visit so I will get to at least see a small part of the area. As you will understand the main worry that I have is about making a new circle of friends, here in the UK most of my friends are work colleagues as I am a shift worker my other friends are 9-5 workers so I tend to be at work when they are off and as I'm not going to be able to work initially due to child care I was wondering how easy you found it. It would be nice to here from you, thanks Vicky

I can not believe it but after 3 and a bit years of living in Darwin, we come back from our month long holiday in the UK to the news we can finally move from Darwin to Albury Wodonga. So doing things in style by having a road trip over Christmas . Move out on the 20th of Dec and start the long drive to our new home. Staying at Alice Springs, Coober pedy, Port Augusta, Adelaide, Melbourne and then finally Wodonga. There have been parts of NT that I have enjoyed like last weeks off roading in Kakadu national park. Ive enjoyed my cycling especially since I got my new mountain bike . However now we are heading towards the build up and the wet season I am so glad im finally leaving the weather behind.
