Re: Exchanging licences
how the driving industry is today in UK, its only going to get worse so i might not want to drive hgv in UK again, if i have spent a couple of years in Canada and if i come back.
if you are in your early forties you have also got to think about your medical at 45, no medical you lose your hgv entitlement..

I know what you mean. The thing is, if I'm not a truck driver I dont know what on earth I would do instead. I'm 24 now so I suppose it would be possible to retrain but I dont know what as. I've pretty much hated every other job I've ever had, clock watching all day and 8 hours seeming like a whole week. I love driving trucks, I get fed up of driving in the UK but I go to Switzerland most weeks anyway so its something different and I love the sort of simple gypsy lifestyle if you can call it that. So if I did return to the UK, it'd have to be as a truck driver I think.

Re: Exchanging licences
Quote from DVLA
Canadian licences
If you are the holder of a Canadian licence you will receive automatic transmission only when exchanging for a British licence. This can only be upgraded to manual upon presentation of confirmation, from the relevant licensing authority, of a manual test being passed or a manual test is passed in this country.

Re: Exchanging licences
I think a lot of drivers get the wrong information from DVLA - I challanged their web-site and this resulted in a whole change in DVLA's exchange policy.
As 4+ yrs ago I came to UK from Australia, their at the time web-site said:
Austrlaia, we will exchange a license to equalivent to your Australian.
Well the CRAP I went throgh so I took the DVLA to court and now they have altered to this interactive page and anyone can do the check abd now they get the TRUE facts:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/Mo...rive_in_gb.dsb
Conclusion if you have a Lorry License from another country except within the EU
Can you exchange your driving licence for one issued in Great Britain (GB)?
Conclusion
* you cannot exchange your driving licence or continue to drive large vehicles
* you can drive a car and or motorcycles on your valid licence for up to 12 months from the date you become resident in GB
* you will need to stop driving once the 12 months are over
* if you wish to continue driving any type of vehicle in GB you will need to apply for a provisional driving licence and take a theory and practical driving test
I just wished people would get their fact right before posting to inform others as in the past I got caught out and it cost me a lot in £££ to fight it.

What I mean is, I'm not getting C+E put on my licence because I have a Canadian class one, I'm getting a British C+E entitlement back because I passed and held that class before I even went to Canada. I'm not sure what your situation is/was. Did you have a British class one licence before you went to Australia or did you only get your first one in Australia and then try and get it swapped like for like when you returned to the UK later on?
