Default Working while on vacation overseas.

If I take my laptop with me, what are the potential issues if I have to work while in Europe? Hopefully I won't have to work while away, but just trying to be prepared.

eh? just working on your laptop? Shouldn't be a problem. Going out and doing work for which you will get paid, or paid in kind would be. Think building work or something.

In France, as a business owner I had to complete a questionnaire from the tax authorities before I started up - to teach me all about what types of employment were legal and which were not. I had to laugh at the one where if you owned a property that you were doing up and you had relatives come to stay who helped you build it in exchange for you giving them somewhere to sleep and meals - well, that's illegal. Everyone in France does it of course. Issues arise if an accident occurs - then everyone involved is in deep doodah.

I do get paid for work using my laptop. Just as well, because sometimes it's no fun. I would be using a VPN to connect back to the US.

I really wouldn't worry. How long are going for? Where?
