What I like about America. [A politics-free thread]

Re: What I like about America. [A politics-free thread]
It was insurance that killed me when looking at used cars. I had my eye on (what I thought was a rather nice) late-model Escort LX that was in a used car lot down the road from my house. I would have been able to scrape together the money to buy it, but the insurance would have run me something like £3,500 a year because I was 23 at the time with no driving record.
Buying the new Corsa allowed me to get free insurance for the first year, so I went with that.

Oh yeah. The car was only worth two grand (maybe less). It's insane now, and NI insurance rates are higher anyway because we're full of chavvy boy racers and joyriders

Uber and Lyft are so reasonably priced and convenient. Is it worth getting a car?

But sometimes it's nice to take a wee run up the Antrim coast in your own car without having to rely on someone else to do so.

For work, I wouldn't need one. If I was working in Belfast again, I'd live somewhere with a station and just get the train in and out every day, with the added benefit of lots of walking. Taxis home from the pub, as always.

My mum used to rent cars after my dad left though before she had her own, if we were going to take a trip and we do it all the time on vacations, both here and in the UK so yeah, that works. Still nice to have your own, of course.
Of course, when I was 23, the trains were unreliable and I wanted a car so I could burn about in it when I wanted to, not just to drive to and from work

It was more for the Life on Mars connection, but yeah that would work.
Nobody does a police van quite like us lot on the other side of the Irish Sea, of course.
Just look at that majestic mother****er. Can take half bricks and petrol bombs during 12th of July riots like a champ.
No wonder the mainland UK wants to be rid of us
