Ah! In New Zealand one is Maori from descent. With any far distant direct ancestor in your line you can mark yourself Maori.
Maori have special reserved seats in parliament. There are support networks, grants, scholarships, funding and all manner of things exclusive for Maori, not Pakeha ( those with no Maori ancestry) , if one can claim descent.

Perhaps the transracial issue could be explained by the theory of reincarnation. I've read of it being used as an explanation for transgender issues.
Just as my strong dislike of Indian cooking might mean that I was a lower caste Indian in another life and don't want to be reminded of that experience by the smell of curry.
