Yes but in winter (so to speak) the extra 10 miles can be a few extra degrees to the positive.

Significantly more winter daylight than the UK. Yes, I know there is not so much daylight in the summer, but the difference there happens mostly while I am asleep so it doesn't have as much impact.

A landlord asking for $900 cash for rent is asking for trouble. It means that his tenants probably know that that is a stash of cash at the beginning of the month. Someone paying $900 a month rent is probably not the sort of person you want to know that you have a stash of cash. Most landlords I would assume request money orders, which also can be purchased at the grocery store.

I never thought of it that way but you're right. In England it gets light in the summer way before I want to get up - and I'm an early riser!

I remember as a student drinking till the morning, in the summer you would hardly notice it ever got dark, or so it seemed.

Looking at the sunrise and sunset times, there is only 1 hour difference in day length at the summer solstice between Devon and Portland,Oregon. I thought it would be more.

It also stayed light in the evening much longer in the UK. When I first moved to NYC, the thing that struck me most was how much sooner it got dark on summer evenings. Where I had been used to it staying light until 10 pm or so, it was dark in NYC by 8:30 pm at the summer solstice.

If you want long summer day's, Alaska might work...Anchorage sunrise is 4:20am first day of summer and sunset first day of summer is 11:42pm....Of course the winters may not be fun.....

Fairbanks has a nice long day in summer. Sunrise 2:58am and sunset at 12:47am so no real night to speak of.

When I first came here no one pumped their own gas. Oil level check, windshield washed, green stamps or steak knives

It is pretty much broad daylight by 4am in the UK at that time, and well on the way to daylight by 3.30am - IIRC dawn on 6/21 is around 3.50am. It is possible to sit outside reading until well after 10pm too. I would say that it is only truely "dark" between 11pm and 2.30pm.

My experience, when I worked nights on my summer job when I was a student was in Gloucester, so those times would be about 10 minutes earlier in London.

Alaska can also give you a summer of no sunset or sunrise May 11 to Aug 1 up all day. Of course the winter is the opposite. And Barrow is pretty far north and isolated, but Alaska Airlines does have job postings often for that airport and housing would be an issue and pay is a little low for the cost of basic essentials.

1. Landlord doesn't live here. He is a multi-millionaire living oversea's. His agent collects the rent on the first or rent can be mailed to a PO Box.

2. We don't pay in cash, but money order and to get said money order requires cash since our debit card is limited to $500 per day, but ATM is limited to $1,000 per day. Yes the machines do $500 max sometimes, but they do allow 1 $500 transactions and 1 $400 transaction. The reason we do not go to the bank for money order and have them deduct electronically is because bank is several miles away and charge $8 or $9 for a money order, a fee free ATM and money order place is right next door. Easier all around and they only charge $4 for the money order.

3. Grocery store is out of the way, and to get cash at grocery store one needs to make a purchase, and the grocery store will not do $900 cash back, usually max is $100 sometimes less.

4. People paying $900 are not automatically criminals and who knows what their income is, one neighbor is a nurse and doctor both working at the hospital, Not sure why that comment was even made. It's actually a pretty popular building for nurses and other hospital staff as its 2 blocks from the hospital, only 4 year old building, and reasonable rent for the area. I highly doubt anyone living here is the type to rob someone especially the landlords agent and I wouldn't think many if any are paying in cash anyhow.

I wasn't trying to be offensive, but around here $900 is the lower end of the rental spectrum. Low rents tend to be in less desirable areas, which tend to have higher crime. A bit of a generalization I know and is not always true. Most people are nice people, no matter what their income.

Most grocery stores have ATMs and also sell money orders
