Hi there,

My fiance will be here in less than 2 days and 8 hours and 33 minutes (nice little
countdown program called TimeLeft http://www.nestersoft.com/timeleft/ Pick the freeware
version =). At any rate, I'm not a coffee drinker. Coffee is a huge part of his daily
waking ritual. He has already been to the US before and frankly told me our coffee sucks
(at least the coffee he had at restaurants). If you have the time, could someone recommend
a good brand of coffee to try out?

Many thanks, Tiffiny

FWIW, the primary thing he probably does not like about most coffee in the US is that it
looks and tastes more like colored water...so the best thing to do is to make it stronger
(use more of it).

However, that being said, most major malls have a coffee store where you can buy just
about any variety of coffee that you would like, and you might take him to one of these
stores and let him see what looks good.

We have found, however, that the Eight O'clock Brand coffee beans (most reasonably-priced,
at wal-mart and several other places) make a nice cup of coffee and also a very acceptable
cup of espresso (with a nice crema on the top)...I suggest that you invest in your own
grinder, and that way you can grind it fresh every day, it tastes much better that way, in
my experience.

You may find that a stove-top percolator makes a better cup of coffee that the common
"drip through" Mr. Coffee types, if you want something that will stand a spoon
properly.

BEing that he is European than he likes his coffee strong and on the bitter side. Give
Starbucks a shot. I found this brand's non-flavored brand to be just like the coffee I
have drank in Germany Switzerland and Austria. You can buy it at any Starbucks, or online,
or in some Sam's Clubs and Costco's

Drip & boiled coffee are pretty bad, I would suggest grinding your own beans & using a
"french" press (you can find it at most cookware stores) I am partial to coffee blends &
roasts from Green Mountain Coffee Roasters found at
http://www.greenmountaincoffee.com/default.asp of course I'm biased as it's a Vermont
company and I'm from Vermont.

Thanks for the inputs, we'll be giving many different things a try I'm sure.

Cheers, Tiff

I agree, the french coffe makers (press) are the best, boiling water over the coffe, will
make the coffee bitter, that's why the coffee here in the US tastes kind of bad in most
restaurants. I've seen this kind coffee maker even in Kmart or Walmart, very
inexpensively. You might want to try the Kona Coffee from Hawaii, it's actually pretty
good, and they have different varieties, though I am not sure where in the mainland you
can find it.

I have found no coffee that my husband likes, he drank coffee all day everyday in the UK,
here he says exactly what you said, "tastes like colored water". He since found out he has
high blood pressure and the doctor says limit his coffee to 1 or 2 cups. I still havent
found one he really likes. Thanks to these post I think I am going to find a new coffee
maker, maybe that is the problem Karryl [email protected] wedding pics at

brands i like (they may not all be available outside seattle):

vivace (excellent coffee -- order from espressovivace.com), torrefazione, millstone,
seattle's best coffee. starbucks isn't my favorite but it's drinkable.

to keep it from tasting like restaurant coffee, don't buy cans of ground coffee. invest in
a grinder (you can get a good one for around $20) and buy whole bean. grind what you need
when you need it and keep the beans in a vacuum-sealed container in a cool dry place.
don't buy from bulk coffee bins, either; better to have beans that were vacuum-sealed with
a one-way valve. you have no way to know when the beans in the bins got put there.

I would have to agree with you on the green mountain coffee, I'm not from vermont, but
rather a neighboring state, so there is a little less bias. I usually buy sample sizes
when I want to try a new coffee, or go to a shop to taste test a new blend.

Sorry, Rita, and all Seattlites - Starbucks is crap. Look for a good quality Italian
coffee - Arabica beans. A good brand is Lavazza.

Plungers are good for two or three cups, otherwise a good drip filter percolator.

The only flavour in coffee should be COFFEE. Nothing else. Not even sugar. (But then I am
a purist).

My mom has always used an old pyrex stove-top percolator, and it always made top-notch
coffee, IMHO. You can make it strong without it being bitter.

Don't forget the water. hard vs soft, high chlorine vs low chlorine can both make big
difference in taste.
