The Nuclear Option
Great documentary on PBS last week - Nova series. The Nuclear Option. First, covers the dire situation at the Fukushima plant, then discusses the many possible future options. In my view, a fairly balanced presentation of the situation.
One fact I learned - China opens a new fossil fuel plant every week. This demonstrates the reality that we can't just say 'use alternative fuels' ... there just isn't enough wind and solar to satisfy the rapidly growing needs of the developing countries like India and China.
Another fact - there are folks developing new reactors that can use existing, 'spent' fuel (so no net new used fuel to dispose of), and that can survive without cooling water. Also Bill Gates is sinking money into new reactor designs.
Should be required watching for anyone blindly saying that Nuclear should never be considered.
