DVLA doing away with the paper counterpart in favour of an "online sharing system".

Your a bit out of date. It has been and gone. From the 1st of June the paper part ceased to exist.

Not so far out of date. From the 8th of June, no? So went into effect last Monday....

Anyway, it was news to me when I went on the DVLA website. Thought it might be of interest to others here too...

oh dear, my poor OH. He's had the same paper only license since he left Uni...that's in spite of moving about a million times. He's still got it I think since he didn't have to surrender it when he took his Texas test.

Maybe he should frame it.

Still valid, subject to the usual BE arguments.

A paper licence is not the same as a paper counterpart. If you only have a paper licence, i.e. you've never held a photocard, then that is still valid and should be kept. If you have a photocard licence and a paper counterpart then you only need your photocard from now on.

As soon as he goes to change the address he would need to get a photo card. That's ignoring the whole "what address to put on" bit.

If he ever moves back to the Uk he can apply for a new photocard. Nothing he cam do now if he is non resident.

Yes, the article I first posted says this--you should keep whatever kind of UK DL you presently have. But the paper counterpart will no longer be issued.

The paper counterpart includes information on a driver’s penalty points along with details of what vehicles they can drive. Drivers still need to keep their actual driving licence, whether it is a plastic photocard licence or an old style paper licence which was issued before 1998.”

I know you're aware of it - other posters obviously didn't click through and thought that it was the paper licences that were being scrapped which is not the case.

I guess expats who moved overseas before 1998 might be expected to be confused.... Or those who never applied for a photocard.

I still have both my photocard and the paper counterpart, but my husband lost his counterpart in the move here. He's happy to hear they've been scrapped.
