Default March for Science/Earth Day

It struck me that we have more than a few proud science nerds here.... Anyone else marching today? The dog & I are preparing to join our local one in about an hour.

Also many Earth Day events taking place this weekend and next week. Beach cleanups most notably in my area....

I marched in San Francisco. "Grab 'em by the data" was my favourite sign.

Too many prior commitments for me to make the local march.

Online comments are odd, it seems that many people have confused the "March for Science" with the "March for Saving the Environment from Oil Usage" and are calling everyone who attended a hypocrite.

I took my kids to the march in Charleston. It was a pretty decent turnout.

Oh good, glad to see that some others participated too.... I had the idea this crowd had a fair number working in the sciences, as well as others quite interested.

Yep, I've heard lots of different criticisms levelled at this march. Too political. not political enough, too "white", too elitist, too unfocussed & vague, too 'unscientific'.... & on & on.

A reporter for a local newspaper asked me to say why I was there in one sentence. I found that difficult, but finally said something along the lines of- the way those in power are treating science these days frightens me.

Even though I work in a STEM field job, these marches are far too political for me to even be bothered going to.

What is wrong with a march being political?

I'd rather go to a school and try convince kids to enter STEM jobs than get my photo snapped beside some person's anti-trump poster.

I'm all for people's peaceful demonstrations, it's just something I don't want to get involved with.

What do we want?
Evidence-based policy.
When do we want it?
After peer review is complete.

I have to agree. Most "marches" like this are at least somewhat political. They're protests against what seem to be trending policies promoted and enacted by those in power.

Political activism is a good thing, IMO. The march I was a part of was VERY peaceful....
