I'm flying back to New Jersey (Newark airport) in a few days, but my son sent me a message about a dreadful incident a couple of days ago at the shopping mall in the town where our house is.

A young patent attorney (aged 30) had his Range Rover carjacked when he returned to the multi-storey car park at the Short Hills mall with his wife and was shot in the head. He was pronounced dead a few hours later. The car was found yesterday abandoned in Newark and the perps are 'still at large'

Another Range Rover was carjacked earlier the same evening from outside the owner's house in a nearby suburban town.

As you know The Mall At Short Hill is one of my haunts. There have been several similar incidents over the years. Not surprising as it's the most upscale mall in NJ and it is situated so close to Newark.
Ain't that the truth...the very reason I was glad to see the back of mine.

I used to spend a lot of time in New Jersey on business, and I know the Mall at Short Hills well - stayed at the Hilton there a couple of times. At first I was surprised when you said that there had been other incidents like this over the years but, on reflection, I suppose it does make sense - if you want to steal a vehicle or rob someone then you go where the money is ...

I was a bit surprised as have always felt really safe there, but probably shouldn't have been. I have parked next to a car in that carpark this summer that had all their windows down and bags of stuff on the seats, including GPS still plugged in.

There have been 24 carjackings of high end cars in New Jersey in the last month. My husband said I needn't worry with my car...

What I meant was if they don't find enough blood and gore nearby they cast their net further afield - one of our news channels appears to focus solely on death and misery when there are so many good stories to report.
