Default Making a will

Now that I'm in the USA, married and hopefully settling down in a house shortly, we're starting to look at options for writing a will.

Does anyone have recommendations on the DIY ones out there? Or should we stay clear?

We've both never had one before so any input is appreciated.

Thanks.

I guess it comes down to how complicated your affairs are. I have assests and beneficiaries in both the US and UK so had a lawyer in the US draw up my will.

Nothing in the UK anymore... Well about £2 in a non interest baring account. The Queen can have that to buy a treat for the Corgis if she so desires.

In the US our assets are pretty simple and nothing out of the ordinary.

We used an online program by Suze Orman. It covers everything and is inexpensive. The Will, Power of Attorney, Health Advocate etc. You will have a login to be able to go into your account and make any changes necessary. We have no assets in the UK, but have a home and 2 children here in the US. A lawyer will probably charge in the region of $1K.

Among the DIY online sites, Legal Zoom is supposed to be good.

After procrastinating for years, M 's heart attack was our wake up call and we knew Will's, power of attorney and living wills were needed.

We went with Legal Zoom and we're very happy with the result.

It was a few years ago but mine cost $300 and that included the complication of the UK stuff.

We used Legalzoom and it was pretty easy and quick to do. Unless you have complex finances or multiple families (kids from other partnerships etc) I would keep it simple.

I was thinking about this around six months ago. Stumbled across some small print in the benefits package at work and realized that I could get it done for free with the Hartford through my work.

Recommend you take a quick look to see if there's anything available in your package first.
