Technically I think they suffered from striking workforce issues.

The Mazda MX-5 is a hairdressers card.
My ideal 80's sports car would be one of these. This one is a 1985 in excellent condition for $42k, it has 35k miles on it. I was very tempted
I've seen some around for as low as $35k.

I'd have been tempted too, unfortunately I don't have $42k lying around looking for a home, AND I have several needs looking for $42k.

Then there are the days you put in a few search terms into Craigslist and ponder a Fiat 124 Spider for $400 (some engine parts in trunk).

Yeah maybe not.

That depends on whether your hobby is driving, or fixing old cars!

I wanted one of those Sprites for years, and in fact know someone in CT who has one. Fortunately, he has the budget necessary to maintain it.

I got my Miata when I came to grips with the fact I would never have a Sprite unless I married a mechanic, and 23 years later my blue baby is still utterly reliable -- for a fun drive you can't make a better investment if you don't have money to burn.

OK well this wasn't my dream car, but it was one of the most expensive cars I have ever seen outside of a race, show, or museum, and one of the two most surprising car-related sights (out on the road, chance sightings) I have ever seen.

I was taking a shortcut behind some industrial buildings down near the railroad in a small town in rural NC, when I saw a plain, unmarked (no name or logo on the side) white semi trailer hooked to a similarly plain tractor unit, parked next to the railroad embankment. Neither tractor nor trailer were special in any way, certainly not new, nor even clean. As I approached the doors were open at the back, and I could see a car inside. The car was big, and dark, and I was thinking "Mercedes", I slowed as I passed looking up into the back. The name on the rear said "Maybach"!!! WTF?

In the town where I saw it, there are likely only a handful of houses, maybe a couple of dozen, tops, worth more than that car was! It is the only Maybach I have ever seen.

Myself ... I still have my 1984 Mercedes 380SL, shes an absolute dream to drive for a 29 year old car the paintwork and the engine are both in great condition, the seats have faded a bit but she can still lay down the vaavoooom when you press that pedal.
Beautiful car. I've always thought that particular era of SL was timeless.

I have two words for you...
Running costs...

Cheap to buy but a client of mine bought one a couple of years ago and immediately dropped 5 figures on its first service.

Oh you don't?! I thought everyone had $80k to transfer and spend at will.
You know, the amount of a reasonable car...

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Anyway, back to cars. If we're talking unattainable dream cars, I would love an original 427 Cobra ('66). I was lucky enough to go in one about 15 years ago and it was awesome.

Perhaps I'll get a kit version one day (after the new stingray which I have a soft spot for).

Now to find a bank to rob...

A manager at the first firm I worked for after graduating had built a Cobra kit car. It looked amazing, ..... but it had a 2.0 litre Cortina engine in it!!! Seriously, WTFing point in that? ..... It just sounded so wrong!

Understand but this one had all the required service work and all the typical updates done. My friend recently dropped 7k on repairs to a 2003 Honda odyssey because they didn't have the money to buy anything else.

Bottom line is I can't afford the car. I need 16k for a new roof on a '96 house in the next two years. Plus I've got two kids needing 5k each in orthodontic braces and a wife who wants her boobs done at a cost of 6k, even though I've told her I could just think of someone else ...

When driving between Seattle and Portland back in the late 90's I found myself in the middle of a caravan of around 20 De Loreans. I don't believe an elephant crossing I-5 could have surprised me more.
