Default Laptops may be banned on European Flights

Has anyone ever checked their laptop on a flight? I would be concerned about it getting stolen or damaged.

I have, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else.

The whole thing is stupid anyhow... I see no comfort in deciding something might be a risk and then sticking it in the hold. If laptops are a genuine concern DONT PUT THEM ON THE PLANE.

Bullshit.. just like all their other "security" posturing at the airport.

Has there been some kind of intelligence that terrorist groups are going to set off bombs in large electronics? Or is it just paranoia?

The way this is going, we are going to have to all fly naked.

That was over a year ago. If people really thought that it was a significant threat you would think that they would have done something about it a bit sooner. As it is we appear to have over 12 months of data demonstrating that it hasn't happened again.

Not just him. Flying back to Australia from the Middle East last week, all of my electronics and my hands were swabbed down and tested at the gate, as were those of all other passengers. Never had/seen that happen on such a scale before.

If you're smart enough to build a bomb in your laptop and it's in the hold, surely you would be smart enough to be able to detonate it wirelessly just as you could if it was in the overhead or under your seat. One Middle East airline was considering supplying rental laptops. I'm sure they'd be really safe and secure to use.

I spent over an hour getting through the TSA line on my last trip (Logan). If I had been wanting to cause damage I would have done it in the MASSIVE crowd caused by the TSA before I got to the scanner. In fact, I could have done it when they asked me to "turn it on" in the line.

Oh, and the scanner can't "deal with elastic" according to the guy who insisted on patting my ankles cos I had sweat pants on.

Or tissues.

Useless gits.

You wear elasticated bottom sweat pants? I've gone off you slightly.

There's no point to the ruling other than to make the idiots of the world believe their leaders are keeping them safe.

What? You thought I would dress properly? I can't think where you would have ever got that idea. I barely wear pants.

That's fine. It's elasticated ankles I can't cope with.

How about within the confines of the home? I finally succumbed to the comfort and warmth of sweat pants (which just happen to have elasticated ankles), but I won't set foot outside the house in them ...

Now they are considering banning laptops on all flights into and departing the US.

U.S. may ban laptops from all airplanes flying in and out of the country - National | Globalnews.ca

Not sure I would want to fly on a plane with all the laptops in the hold along with their batteries.

The FAA currently doesn't permit such batteries in checked baggage due to the hazard they create.
