Default INS records of dead famous people

https://www.uscis.gov/about-us/elect...files-interest

George Harrison's was the most amusing, check out the telegram he sent to Nixon.

John Lennon's is one of the most famous immigration cases in US history, hence the file being 2,600 pages long, eventually the concept of "deferred action" was invented, i.e. not in the government's interest to pursue the case.

Not quite as famous as Chae Chan Ping v. US and Wong Kim Ark v. US but hey, they didn't have the INS back then...

What a great find! I love two bits out of this: The male applicant is a musician; and: George Harrison, member of former "Beatles".

I really like Andy Gibb's file... he's the younger brother of the BeeGees. It's a great nostalgic look at a fine young musician gone too early!

If you've got the time, John Lennon's is amazing reading. The INS hand delivered their NTAs.

It was politically motivated. Leon Wildes, his attorney, would often talk about the case. It seems that Yoko Ono really liked him. I think with good reason.

Are these files public information?

If not, I wonder why it's OK for USCIS to publish them just because the subjects are dead.

I imagine they've been available under FOIA all along.

Not quite - according to the USCIS FOIA Request Guide you can only obtain records relating to living people other than yourself with their written permission but, apparently, as soon as they are dead anyone can get the records ...

Privacy Act doesn't apply to dead people, except certain sensitive information. What I find fascinating in John Lennon's record is where it says things like: "John Lennon, a former member of the Beatles, together with George Harrison and [redacted] and [redacted]."

Hmmmmmmmmm.
