Harvey: Where was the British Consulate support?

Re: Harvey: Where was the British Consulate support?
The whole point was that the french consulate took it upon themselves to send out requests for help for accommodation for their french citizens. Anyone could volunteer. I did and I'm not french. The consulate has compiled the lists of people who responded, sorted them into cities and then helped the homeless french people find places to stay from the list of volunteers.
I'm sure that had the British consulate sent out a similar request, I and many other Brits would have been more than happy to reply.

Gate crashing this thread - many expats on here refer to the UK as "home" so I guess it's inevitable that many, in times of crisis, look for support from locally based national representatives. Personally I have no expectations of our Embassy but then I chose to make Hungary my "home" & take all that goes with it.

What the other consulates are actually doing I have no idea. I think the UK consulate may also be operating some service for UK affected citizens from Washington?

I live in earthquake prone NZ. I would not be looking to the UK consulate in a time of crisis. I would be looking to NZ.
However , if I was on holiday or extensive travel , then yes, I would be looking to the UK consulate to advise me if that was my point of reference.
Other than that it would be the NZ guys at the moment.

Hmmm
I know there is something in Denver but not sure it is much more than one man and a dog.
I would not have thought of contacting them through Facebook.
If for example something happened and I had an issue going back to the UK I would contact them.

I heard a long time ago that there is one man here, well in Charlotte. He apparently has an office, but I don't know if he has a dog.

My grandparents, who lived in Egypt for many years, referred to England as home. My mother, in her passive aggressive way, turned the tables on them by referring to Egypt as home. England, she referred to as "this bloody country."

Just as a point of comparison: I am in developing world nations with a lot of frequency, and I have multiple citizenship, including the US.
I do register with the US Embassy, but I have no expectation that they would ever lift a finger to help me, regardless of what the emergency was.
I make my own emergency plans and feel that when I am in a dicey location, if excrement begins to hit the fan, the coup/war/natural disaster/alien invasion will get to me long before the embassy ever gets its phone tree organised, let alone an evacuation.
Give a medal to the French Consul for awesomeness if you want - but sorry - my advice is that you are on your own until conclusively proven otherwise.
