Re: Gun Ownership
Ok so for those who are interested in getting a FID (Firearms ID) and Handgun permits in NJ this is the route I took...
I'm an L2 which is a non-immigrant visa. If you have another visa type it may be easier!
Go to the New Jersey state police website - Firearms Forms to Download | New Jersey State Police
Download 2x STS033 form and the SP 066 form. Fill them in but don't sign them. Find 2 American friends who will act as references and add them to the form.
Go down to your local police dept find the firearms officer and see how friendly they are. Sound them out about processing and 'gun friendliness' etc. Once you have chatted, Sign the forms in front of them and hand them in.
You will be given info about fingerprint processing - Book an appointment and attend. Then you wait for your American friends to return their references, the mental health check to pass and the police dept to process everything.
Don't chase or hassle them - but give a friendly call every 2-3 weeks to ask about progress. It's supposed to be 30 days, but mine took about 3 months end to end.
If you pass you will get an FID which 'allows' you to buy long guns and if you applied for handgun permits you can buy a single handgun for each permit. Be aware that you can only buy one handgun every 30 days and the permits generally are 90 day limits (you can extend if the dept is willing)
Ok so great - you have your FID and permits. Can you get guns! NOPE!
There is a federal background check form when purchasing . If you have a non-immigrant visa then you have to have an exemption - see form section 12.d.1 and 18.c
https://www.atf.gov/firearms/docs/44...53009/download
https://www.fbi.gov/file-repository/...earms.pdf/view
So what are the exemptions I hear you cry!
Accredited foreign dignitary, foreign law enforcement, yadda yadda, .... and State Hunting license!
So whilst you are waiting for the FFL go do a hunting course and buy a hunting License
Then when you get your FID back you can go buy your gun!
Easy!

Re: Gun Ownership
Soooo many more hoops to jump through up there in the Northern states.
Down here in GA it went like this:
Go to probate court and fill out form while there ($60)
Go straight to Sheriffs Office and give fingerprints - no appointment required ($20)
Wait 2 weeks to receive card in the mail
Done!

Re: Gun Ownership
You used to be able to do that legally in Oregon, up until a few years ago, with no checks whatsoever, now you need to go through an FFL check to buy from a private party.

Re: Gun Ownership
California is one of the most regulated States in the country where buying a firearm is concerned. A written test on basic firearm safety is also required. This is a very good idea I think. Los Angeles County banned gun shows several years ago because of illicit sales of firearms. Thanks to gang suppression units and community policing shootings have declined considerably over the years but illegal weapons beyond numbers are still around.
I used to work near a section 8 housing project. A couple of years in a row I had to work New Years Eve. Right on midnight when the car horns and the fireworks started you could hear the sound of an AK47 going off and I do know what that weapon sounds like.
When you think that there are now more firearms than people in this country you have to wonder where the hell it's all going to end up

Article in this month's Pediatrics Journal of the American Pediatric Assoc.
Childhood Firearm Injuries in the United States | Articles | Pediatrics
"RESULTS: Nearly 1300 children die and 5790 are treated for gunshot wounds each year. Boys, older children, and minorities are disproportionately affected. Although unintentional firearm deaths among children declined from 2002 to 2014 and firearm homicides declined from 2007 to 2014, firearm suicides decreased between 2002 and 2007 and then showed a significant upward trend from 2007 to 2014. Rates of firearm homicide among children are higher in many Southern states and parts of the Midwest relative to other parts of the country. Firearm suicides are more dispersed across the United States with some of the highest rates occurring in Western states. Firearm homicides of younger children often occurred in multivictim events and involved intimate partner or family conflict; older children more often died in the context of crime and violence. Firearm suicides were often precipitated by situational and relationship problems. The shooter playing with a gun was the most common circumstance surrounding unintentional firearm deaths of both younger and older children."

Re: Gun Ownership
I just do not understand people who leave a loaded firearm unsecured when there are children in the house. If a child is injured in those circumstances it should be a felony.
