I'm cheap when it comes to spending things for myself, but to be honest I enjoy giving gifts. I make enough money to make someone else happy.

I agree, and from the same regional perspective as yourself.

I don't mind treating myself either, but am reluctant to replace that which works just because it is old; it needs to be worn out, or broken an irreparable before it gets replaced. .... Typed as I hear the washing machine in the background, with bearings that I replaced myself last year.

Pulaski, check out this subreddit.

Rete, I agree about the dowry and stuff.
And I know that giving often gives pleasure to the giver. I like to give gifts and make people happy. I just don't want to expect that from other people.

A lot of people just do the following because, well, that's just what they do.
You know, just following the Life Script (TM). Go to college, get married, buy a house, spawn a couple of crotch goblins etc.

When we got married, we didn't have a registry and it was nice.
Recently we had a house warming and people brought presents. We were kind of embarrassed. We wanted people to come because we enjoy their company - not because we wanted stuff from them.

My first marriage, we eloped so no big wedding and no registry although we had a family church wedding 6 weeks later.

Second marriage, we combined two households of long existence, so no gift registry for that wedding either. Guests were asked to just attend and join in the wedding ceremony and the 5 course dinner for 44 guests and not to give gifts or money since they were traveling so far and wide. We paid for the hotel rooms for the weekend for all members of our wedding party and all family members.

I did have a small baby shower for my first child but none for my second.

Either of my girls had registries either. If they were given cash gifts, I didn't ask as it was not my business and they never said. Both had baby showers for their first child.

As we footed the bill for our own wedding breakfast and celebration, you do make a fair point. We didn't get married to be showered with gifts, we did it because we wanted to celebrate our wedding with family and friends. The gifts were a nice thought, but not why we got married. ..... My only uncle and his wife were too cheap to even be bothered to show up.

Well I'm just glad I don't have your attitude to a significant event.

Each to their own.

I went to two weddings last year, cost me $4k alone in flights. Pretty sure those who got married valued me being there in person as opposed to a fancy tea cup set
