bbq's and not being allowed them are a downside to multi-family housing, as it not being allowed to have a real christmas tree.

Interesting thread, never thought about electric grills, but seems they may not be the same.

We bought an electric BBQ for the same reason about 12 years ago for for folks condo in Florida and was pretty much dreading using it but actually it is really good and and cooks some things better then a regular BBQ. (In fairness mainly fish). Overall it is an old bit of kit now but it is still going strong and whilst we are not BBQ experts by any means, we are very particular about our steaks and they have always been really good from there.
I would definitely pick the right home over the perfect grill.

You strike me as someone who's not short of a bob or two, so I wouldn't be going into retirement buying a home that compromised my ability to enjoy something which brought me much pleasure. If there was a significant cost constraint then things might be different.

I was thinking the same thing.

Or find a condo with a built in gas grill

You can buy holey metal trays to put your food on so it doesn't touch the grill.

When we would go to some of the public parks that offer grills, I would wrap each bar with foil and then grill. Or just lay the foil on the grill and using an implement cut through each wrung so that the flame or heat from the charcoal is directed to the meat and the juices can fall through making the desired flame-up.

That's how I used to do fish on the hibachi, smear margarine on either side of the fillet so they don't stick and super easy clean up.

It looks to me like they're all gas fired.

There are even some 2 story townhouses that don't have the requisite patio for the grill. I'm generally looking at places on slopes, as that is the typical location of places with the best views, and slopes obviously present problems in terms of presenting outdoor space. I've seen one amazing Townhouse that is 3 story, with decks on two of the three layers, with fantastic views, but you don't have any direct access to any 'ground' due to the specific orientation on a slope.

Yup, you can use wood additions or the lava rocks, but guess you like giving the appearance of being an outdoor's man

Sounds like you are happy using your indoor gas stove now, but there's no way you can replicate the 'outdoor grill' effect with indoor equipment, unless you are willing to stink out the house, set off smoke alarms, etc. I've had indoor gas for years and I love it, but it's no substitute for my outdoor gas grill when it comes to burning and smoking stuff!

Thermite can be loans of trouble fun! (The clue is in the last few seconds of the video)

I have bought all the ingredients to make some myself, but haven't had a go at making any yet.

My b-i-l used to work in the Chrysler engine plant casting engine blocks and a co-worker's father owned a butcher shop. Every payday they'd buy a case of steaks and cook them in the furnace. He made a set of long hooks for lowering the steaks into the inferno, and they'd count the seconds for rare, med-rare, med etc. He said they got perfect steaks in a matter of seconds.
