Default Eating foods that are well past their expirationd date

Is it safe to eat imported Kraft canned cheese whos expiration date was late 2014? Never been opened. These are hard to come by locally and I and too impatient to order online.

I have heard that expiration dates are just legal cover-my-ass for manufacturers , but I assume safe-for-consumption depends on what food it is. Yes I know dairy products go bad very fast but this is an unopened tin of Kraft cheese. They used to be made in Australia but now are made in Bahrain, though I think the recipe is the same.

No offense but if you like canned cheese it probably doesn't matter if it's passed its use by date or not. Try it and see.

Food sealed in a can is probably OK, but it may depend on the lining of the can and/or if the food attacks the can/lining. Someone was clearing out and old store room when I was still in London and found some unopened Coke cans that were about six years old. Someone (not me!) opened one and tasted it, and reported that it tasted strongly of aluminium.

I used to work for (the owner of) KP, and the date stamped on their nuts was four months after they were roasted and packed, because that was what the regulation set as the maximum life. But nuts packed in foil lined packets were perfectly good for three years and KP gave several cases of nuts to some scientists on a polar expedition where they were going to last for three years.

In short, it depends a lot on the food, how it is processed and packed, and how it is stored.

I love this cheese, tried gourmet cheeses and all , but don't like any of them. This is the only cheese I eat. I am a very very picky eater, always have been.

There are best before dates and use by dates in the UK. It's not always so obvious what kind of date it is on US food.

However in many cases the food is perfectly safe long after the "use by" date, as in the peanuts example I gave above, but there is no way to know that, so far as I know.

Peanuts generally have a best before date, so mainly affects taste, where as meat will have a use by date, or consume by date.

Mostly this stuff is carefully described as "cheese product" rather than actual cheese. The version in your ad must have been produced somewhere with less stringent regulations.

When there are hundreds of cheeses available, maybe even thousands, why would anyone want to eat a "cheese product"?

Well, I have a bit of sympathy here ... I happen to like McDonalds burgers, even though they are not even close to being a burger (I love 'real' burgers too, but they are a different thing altogether). There's something about how all those nasty ingredients and textures blend together to form some sort of magical experience So even though I'm not a 'cheese product' person myself, I can imagine there's just some weird attraction to that chemically enhanced goopy mess, in the same way that 'HP Sauce' has a weird attraction.

Maybe they should call it 'Totally non-cheese product' ... if they liked it then, would that be more acceptable?

I admit to having only one real obsessive phobia and that is food expiration dates

If the date has passed then I chuck it. I know I am probably crazy but I can't use it! Even though most foods are fine, especially canned food if it is too old it goes.

Oh and don't get me started on milk! I love milk but even if the date is close but I don't like the"sniff test" then down the drain it goes

Yep crazy lady

My g/f is the opposite. She takes expiration dates as a challenge. I won't gross you out with specifics And since she never gets sick, she thinks anyone else who pays attention to them is crazy ...

I agree with her. IMO it's a way of getting us to buy more.
