Buying a Used Discovery 3 / LR3 in the US.
So I have been in the US about 3 years now. When we arrived we both were in the fortunate situation to buy some relatively new used cars, the emphasis being on cheap (by US not UK standards) reliable cars. So we are not into car payments of any kind.
Fast forward to today and my Land Rover Discovery itch is back. I am shocked to realise not only are my beloved Discovery / LR3's rare they are comparatively expensive compared to the UK. I have essentially no options in my surrounding area, even though I live perhaps less than 3 miles from a Landy dealership. If I was in the UK I could be picky all day long to find exactly the int / ext colour I wanted. Not here.
Thanks Land Rover US for putting yourself into a "luxury" class, and Land Rover UK for only allowing these vehicles to be produced within the UK.
Rant over. Guess I'll go by something domestic built unless anyone has some amazing secrets to Land Rover ownership in the US they can share.
Jeremy.

I see 314 for sale nationwide on cargurus.com.
Have you tried their search engine?
Sometimes throws up unexpected results.

They are out there, but in much smaller numbers.

One thing I would say is whenever we've gone to look at cars and looked at anything UK/EU they always try and spring you that it'll be a "luxury" car and a "nightmare" to work on or get parts for.
I had a 2015 Volkswagen GTI not long ago and no, parts aren't hard to get for it - just a little more expensive. I've now got a 2018 Chevrolet Colorado truck. It's pretty good, but I do miss that EU build quality!

I had a new LR3...had nothing but problems with it. It was extremely heavy on expensive tyres. After 2 years I was glad to see the back of it.

The Defenders are cool but I can't for the life of me see why anyone would want a Lanroval when you can get Toyota quality.
Remember when Top Gear was filming in Australia and they ditched their Range Rovers to use Land Cruisers?

Good point from OF.
Some of the new Toyota 4Runners are very good looking and it's Japanese so it'll probably rust away before the engine ever goes bang.

Damn the US for not being the UK and not imitating the marketplace of the UK for the convenience of those that immigrated from Britain. How dare you be so inconsiderate.

Not much different from a Disco then, they tend to rot away before they go bang...

Ever seen the pictures of NGO car parks, full of unrepairable Land Cruisers, cause I have. The classic Landy is the most repairable vehicle on the planet. The monocoques, not so much :-(

I collect classic Landies, we have two 101FC and a Disco 1 right now. The LR3 is a lifestyle roadcar.

Cue LR jokes. ..... not leaking, marking their territory; if not leaking its probably empty ..... diff btwn RR/LR and a porcupine - porcupine, the pricks are on the outside.
Do the homework. A very good forum for LR is discoweb.org. Many gearheads on there, esp with the D1 and SII. Each gen of LR have their nuances.
If you know someone who has a dealership, see if they are willing to take you to the auction; or source a good one via their wholesaler or dealer trade. Ballpark, auction value is ballpark around 50-60% of list, make and model specific etc

OP - have you thought about buying domestically or is it more of a last resort as you say?
Go mess around at the dealership - you'll be pleasantly surprised at how well equipped some of the yank tanks are!
