I remember seeing a warning from the council once, about the difference between garbage and trash, and that garbage shouldn't be put in with the trash for collection. .... At least I think it was that way round.

I belive that litter is more a description of where something is as much as what something is - so if you have some trash in your car, when you throw it out of the window it becomes litter.

Let's not forget what garbage/rubbish gets thrown into: here a dumpsterĀ®, there a skip or skip bin. What reaction would you get from your friends if you told them you had tossed your rubbish into the skip? Even without the Brit accent as a hint.

I have never heard of a "skip bin". Most homes in the UK now have a wheelie bin. Before my parents' home got a wheelie bin we use to have a dustbin that looked the one that Top Cat lived in, but with a metal loop handle on each side

We put our household trash in a garbage bin, ... which has wheels.

I read an article in the New York Times today about Janeites from the US visiting the UK to visit Jane Austen sites and go to the Jane Austen Society AGM. It was generally amusing and perceptive. However, at one point the author said that a British person she met worked for the "Royal Post Office."

When I was in the UK we always called it a Dustbin, and the Dustman come around every Monday and carried out to the dustcart.

Of course you could avoid all that and be a fly tipper.

And now, for a bit of levity... Stan Rogers (alas, gone now these many years) - with a song about a dustman!
