I belive that litter is more a description of where something is as much as what something is - so if you have some trash in your car, when you throw it out of the window it becomes litter.

Let's not forget what garbage/rubbish gets thrown into: here a dumpsterĀ®, there a skip or skip bin. What reaction would you get from your friends if you told them you had tossed your rubbish into the skip? Even without the Brit accent as a hint.

We put our household trash in a garbage bin, ... which has wheels.

When I was in the UK we always called it a Dustbin, and the Dustman come around every Monday and carried out to the dustcart.
Of course you could avoid all that and be a fly tipper.
