143 million social security numbers exposed

Re: 143 million social security numbers exposed
I think people are starting to get "data breach" fatigue. My data has probably been leaked a half dozen times that I know about.
I use https://haveibeenpwned.com to track data leaks. Get some random emails every now and then saying such and such website was hacked and my email was on it, etc.

The people who may have just revealed my personal data to hackers now want me to give them my personal data to make sure it is protected from hackers they let steal it in the first place. And these are the people who tell everyone how responsible I am before I can get a loan.
The protection only lasts one year, do they think that I'll get a new SS number in a year? They are pretty much just telling the hackers to wait a year before using them.

I guess explains their crappy security. Hire a college music major as security chief. Any bets on these being 2 who sold stock before announcing the breach?
Equifax's chief information officer and chief security officer are out - Sep. 15, 2017
"Susan Mauldin, who had been the top security officer, and David Webb, the chief technology officer, are retiring from Equifax immediately. Mauldin, a college music major, had come under media scrutiny for her qualifications in security. Equifax did not say in its statement what retirement packages the executives would receive."

Everyone needs to get over the idea that their social security number is some closely guarded secret - it isn't and it never has been.

Also the idea that all you need to get a loan is to key in your SSN and name and sit back and wait for your check. It take a bit more information than that to get a loan, because, contrary to the belief of some people banks and finance companies aren't in the business of just giving money away.

There is, AFAICT nothing to stop someone making up a nine digit number and giving it to their utility company as "their SSN"?

Asked my father-in-law if he was affected by the Equifax data breach. He told me he didn't use Equifax so it won't affect him. Had to explain credit check companies to him.
