You're creating a logical trap here: If someone rebuts the commentary, then they "care," which apparently is an indication of some sort of deficiency and is itself worthy of criticism because the act of "caring" is bad.
The piece is bombastic and overreaching, which ironically exemplifies a rather American characteristic of exaggerating and of taking things over-the-top. I agree with the author to a certain extent, but the guy really ought to look in a mirror, particularly given the juvenile tone that he uses to assert his points.
I've met a lot of Americans like him abroad, who believe that they have "gone native" and are strolling down the Path of Enlightenment, but who are essentially just the other side of the same coin that they claim to despise. He's treating the world like a game of football, in which people support one side or another because it makes them feel good about themselves, not because there is an inherently good reason to choose one of the sides over the other.

When this thread first started, I expected a list of facts, or at least semi-plausible statistics (no statistics are entirely plausible ), but instead I found ten doses of opinionated BS.

They're more anecdotal than anything else. I've encountered a good few of those kind of things over the years, but it is what it is, really.
