I'm heading to Thailand for 2 weeks in September... a week in Bangkok and a week in Phuket.

Wondering what to expect as weather/conditions go. I know its Monsoon season, but have no basis for comparisson. Will it rain all day, every day? Pour like a bastard for a few hours, and then clear up and be lovely?

You get the idea... just wondering what it might be like...

Well, most of the rainy season is exactly like you mention, except the other way
around: Lovely all day, then poor like a bastard for a few hours in the
afternoon/evening and then clear up again for a relatively cool night.

However, September is the month with the most days where it rains most of the day.
Halfway down October the rains stop in the North, the South takes a little longer.

If wheather is a major consideration and you have the option to move your trip a bit
then I would go either a bit earlier or later.

I went to Thailand (Bangkok, Koh Samui and Phuket) in September a few years back. We
had a great time even if it poured down from time to time. But we never had days
where it rained all the time but we did have days where we didn't get any rain at
all. I had a great time even if it was in the middle of wet season.

If it rains too much just head to Malaysia. In September the weather on peninsular
Malaysia's east coast (Perhentian island for instance) is great.
