Default Teaching in the UK

My wife has a bachelor and three masters degrees from Universities here in the USA. She has also been teaching for 15 years. Does anyone know or have information if that experience/degrees are transferable to teach in the UK?

Any websites/links would also be appreciated.

Thanks

Unless things have changed, you need a PGCE (Post-graduate certificate of education), to work as a teacher in the UK. That’s the professional qualification and no amount of degrees or experience is a substitute for it. It’s a one year course and used to be government funded. All major universities have an education department that will do them, google the various UK universities.

Yes, unless you take a Bachelor of Education degree at a teaching university you need the PGCE to teach in a State School. My wife had a BA and had to go this route to teach in Primary school.

HOWEVER, unless it's changed in the last 18 months, you do NOT need a degree or PGCE to teach in a PUBLIC SCHOOL - Eton, Harrow and hundreds of minor ones, etc.Often you do not need degrees to teach in further Education Colleges either. They may ask for one in order to limit the number of candidates, but for colleges, experience in the subject is more required.

I think the requirement to register with the General Teaching Council for teachers in England has been relaxed. NI and Scotland have separate departments and each of these jurisdictions has a General Teaching Council which requires registration for teachers.

GTC registration does not apply to so-called "public schools" (ie the private ones for toffs !)

Technically, you don't now need a teaching qualification to teach in any UK school, however it will depend on the individual school what they require so if you have a specific post in mind it might be worth contacting them to ask.
