Apparently, the British voting public.

Easy to say from Australia, I suppose. Not like you have to live in the UK when it tries to clean up the mess this will leave.

But congratulations Britain, you've managed to make me feel like an American for the first time in my life.

So unless you think that these people are not going to be the ones determining both the terms of our exit and how our economy will be run (as they always have), I'm at a loss as to how improving the lives of "ordinary people" is suddenly going to be made a priority. And I'm as ordinary as they come.
Just for the record. I could have easily voted Remain if Cameron had convinced me that he struck a hard bargain and brought back something tangible.

I understand that and don't disagree with you.

It's this idea that somehow these "elites" will vanish and no longer control our lives, our economy, and our political destiny that just appears false. Why on earth would anyone believe that? Has there been any evidence of it? It's the exact same group of people who are in charge post referendum as it was pre-referendum. And it will stay that way. Frankly, I think a large part of the UK population has simply been bamboozled.

Granted, the UK is an island, but if these people think it's as simple as leaving the EU then bang - no more illegals, they are in for a rude awakening. Especially since the UK still shares a land border with an EU country.

We'll likely keep freedom of movement anyway, to a large extent, so that we can trade with the EU bloc. Poor old Nige is still going to have his traffic jams.

People keep using the term "elites" - who exactly are these people? Specifically I mean.
I don't know for sure (and perhaps I'm just being superior again) but I suspect he might have been making reference to me with the "elitist Guardianistas", "smug hypocrisy" and, on another post "pseudo socialists".

I love the balance of trade of insults on here. It's in my favour as I get out so much more than I ever put in - a nett beneficiary, as it were.

The traffic jams were never to do with the EU anyway. Even if net migration was 1,000,000, which I doubt it was, 2% of the population are not causing overcrowded roads. Immigrants don't just leave customs and go right to the used car lot; Flange is a bloody idiot.

Also, net migration includes all countries. Even without free movement, there are 169 countries outside of the EU that could still potentially contribute to that. Jesus.

Well you know that.

And I know that.

But just over half of the UK succumbed to mass hysteria pushed out by some very objectionable people.

This is not the UK I left, nor is it the one you left. It's more foreign to me now than the US ever was, in reflection. I'm quite irrationally sad today, made to feel this way by the country of my birth.

NI voted to stay in though, I suppose I have that grain of hope. For what it is.

Well, the immigration argument was just a red herring anyway. I have to suspect that deregulation of the UK's single most powerful business sector has more than just a minor influence here (well, London's largest sector, which is effectively the single most prominent offering the UK has in the global market moving forward)

Nonetheless, the UK will survive, even if this truly marks the final end to the "empire", and renders a more realistic and proportional global "footprint" than it's historically held.

I really hope the UK can now focus on itself and get out of Europe altogether, rather than spending so much energy fearing and inhibiting Europe. But we won't be leaving anytime soon, so that's probably wishful thinking.

We shall see.

Would you have any idea when we might be able to start talking? - I'll schedule it in my diary.
