Quite see your point, but have the politicians who make "informed statements"
(Bush ? Merkel ? Clinton ?) been so successful in their decisions these past years ? Merkel seems hell-bent on destroying Europe, Bush's wonderful Middle East War and Clinton's tenure as Secretary of State both proved quite negative. Theresa May a giant of intellectual and practical ability ?

I don't disagree with your suggestion that the "informed statements" of politicians leave much to be desired. But I don't see the evidence re Merkel, she has successfully made herself the doyen of the EU and the majority seem to be happy with that.

It was Merkel who openly stated that Germany would take in around a million refugees. When she started to take the heat for it in Germany she then set about bullying other EU countries to take in "their share"

Her latest target is Hungary which has not gone along with her refugee policies quite rightly claiming that the Hungarian national identity and culture is at risk.

The woman is a menace

Bet you can't find a quote from her for that. She has always refused to put a limit on the numbers and continues to do so.

As for the rest ....

Garbage. Merkel led her country to face the refugee issue and became frustrated at other EU countries dragging their feet, ignoring Schengen rules and trying to move migrants through their countries as quickly as possible.

Hungary (or more specifically Viktor Orbán) is hardly a good example - he has committed his government to building an “illiberal democracy” and his nationalist, right-wing Fidesz government has rejected or failed to implement EU rules - as a member of the club, Hungary should respect its laws or leave.

The Schengen agreement meant free movement of people within the European Community not an open door for people leaving the middle east.

What is happening now can only eventually cause increasing disunity within the EU the and the rise of extreme right wing political parties. This is already beginning to manifest itself

The writing is clearly on the wall for anyone to read

Which as I have already said makes her a menace not only to the future of Germany but Europe as a whole

In your opinion, which is moot as you don't live in the EU. The CEAS binds those EU countries who are part of the schengen zone to a common set of principles in dealing with refugees. Either you accept the ruling or you seek an opt-out (and pay the price) - Hungary wants the aspects of the EU it likes, but not others (sound familiar?).

The "continued rise of extreme right wing political parties" was going on before the refugee crisis and before the EU, but, hey, why let the truth get in the way of your opinion?

The sad thing is, some people still seem to think that if they close their borders (and their eyes) that the problem will just go away.........

What you said was that Merkel openly stated that Germany would take in around a million refugees, which is pure invention on your part - as is the rest of what you said.

Success at using Germany's muscle and her political ability yes, "majority" happy perhaps the politicians. Doesn't changed her wacky belief her policy on the refugees/migrants is the best for Europe's future.

Woman is quite a menace, the Poles, Hungarians and Croats I have met don't quite view her as a savior of Europe- more see her decisions as the end of Western Europe and hope Eastern Europe will find a way to deal with.

I am not sure what Merkel's problem is, she seems an able administrator and not a stupid person.

Germany has experience of taking large numbers of people with nothing, and helping them to integrate well into a modern society. They did this after the fall of the Berlin wall, and the re-unification of West and East Germany.

Should the leaders of the former West Germany have left the former residents of the East in the same state they were in under Communist rule?

Poles, Hungarians and Croats all have leaders who don't want refugees and asylum seekers.

Germany integrated millions of ethnic Germans from eastern Europe after WWII after their expulsion, and of course as you indicate the experience with East Germany. But I think quite obvious it is a lot easy to integrate Germans with a similar language/religion/cultural traditions ( at different levels) into Germany than people Middle East and Africa with a different religious, cultural, historical, linguistic and cultural background.

Assimilation so far has failed to work. The scumbags who plowed into pedestrians in London lived all their lives in communities of people of their own race and religion. It seems they're either anchored too much to their local mosques and Mullahs who encourage them to stay close or that they feel dispossessed and start to research Jihadist groups on the Net as a way to get even with what they perceive as rejection.

Anyone who tells me that integration has been a success in Britain is just blowing hot air and in a complete state of denial
