Default Which living person has done most to destroy the natural world and the future

What? Have I lost my mind? Angela Merkel, the “climate chancellor”? The person who, as German environment minister, brokered the first UN climate agreement, through sheer force of will? The chancellor who persuaded the G7 leaders to promise to phase out fossil fuels by the end of this century? The architect of Germany’s Energiewende – its famous energy transition? Yes, the very same.

Unlike Trump, she has no malicious intent. She did not set out to destroy the agreements she helped to create. But the Earth’s systems do not respond to mission statements or speeches or targets. They respond to hard fact. What counts, and should be judged, as she seeks a fourth term as German chancellor in the elections on Sunday, is what is done, not what is said. On this metric, her performance has been a planetary disaster.

More accurately it's George Monbiot writing in The Guardian. Contrarian click bait, best ignored.

Graun is clickbait central, but George is actually much more nuanced and whilst I do not agree with everything he posts I can see the logic of his thinking.

Owen is of course, well Owen and Jessica Valenti needs medical help.

The article is a little extreme in its interpretation of Merkel's environmental intentions. The author would do better to concentrate on actual climate change deniers, who are doing much more harm by ignoring the problem.

The Guradian is a great newspaper and news source, in my opinion. You'd be hard pressed to find stories on fundamental issues elsewhere. Their series on Appalachian America and the rise of Trump was excellent.

I quite agree. Throwing brickbats in isolation is too easy. All leaders have to walk a tightrope between intention, beliefs, and actually policies. She isn't alone in this

The Guardian has been a much maligned newspaper, .sole for political reasons .ie to shut it up and discredit it. As the Manchester Guardian it was a well respected newspaper ,read by millions. I still believe most of what is written in it reflects the truth. Apart from the obvious 'opinion' pieces.

Maybe people should read the book.. 'The History Thieves' and see what the British Government Intelligence Agency ,together with the USA's National Security Agency did to this newspaper. when it revealed how these two agencies worked against our privacy laws.. They systematically smashed the hard drives on all the records in the Guardians archive's Then nuked them for good measure....

Hmm ... The History Thieves sounds good, I just read the lengthy review of it in the Guardian. Thanks for the recommendation. But, the book seems to be about the fact that in the decolonisation era, the British Government and the colonial authorities systematically destroyed (or migrated back to UK) colonial records that would show British policy in a bad light, massacres, religious discrimination etc.

Google brings up another incident - the destruction of Edward Snowden digital archives by the Guardian, in order to satisfy British & US government demands. But those weren't the Guardian archives as such ... ?

You win today's "Where the Truth Lies™" (geddit?) spot prize for identifying the real historical event from the GeniB fictional account.

It's a copy of The Manchester Guardian of April 1st of the year of your birth.

Chance of a shot at a bigger prize for correctly identifying the spoof story, planted by the gremlins in the print room.

The book talks about the systematic use of 'secrecy' endemic in British Government for over 200 yrs. Since the time of Queen Ann in fact. We have the worst record in the world on transparency . We talk about democracy but we have never practiced it.We have no written constitution. Even our mail is opened if it is deemed of interest to the state. (There was a whole dept that used to do it,attached to the Royal Mail). Snowden revealed that that had now been taken over by digital means. A dept that spied on the internet and shared that information with America. It was that information that he gave to the Guardian. Its hard drive records were destroyed( but the American copies were not.) Those were the ones I was referring to.

Do you think that a suspected terrorist should not have their internet or written communications monitored.
How do you think that the security forces have been able to squash so many plots.
I am not or have never been so naive as to believe that we do not live in a society where anyone of us can become a " person of interest ".
